We’ve all been there: it’s the middle of the day out in town, and lunchtime is upon you. What are you to do? It’s not convenient to go home, cook, and come back out – there’s places to be, people to see, appointments to fulfill. Yet how do you find a cheap and cheerful spot for a quick lunch that doesn’t break the bank? Lunch in Amsterdam prices have been… not the best. I’ve noticed most places offering sit-down meals that cost anywhere from 17 euros to 25 euros a plate, and the other option seems to be… the ever-trusty McDonald’s or Burger King. Where to find a friendly, nutritious meal that ..read more

Life in Amsterdam these days feels as scattered as my thoughts

Saturday morning. After a stormy night, the road shines with moisture. Fat rain drops are slipping from the tree leaves onto a maze of bicycles parked in front of my apartment building. Stretching over a number of soaking-wet seats, I insert a key in the frame lock of my oma fiets’, which opens up with a sharp clack. Sticking out from all directions are pedals, baskets and bike stands. Grabbing the handles, I free my vehicle from their grip. I remove the impermeable seat cover, that indispensable gadget for those who – like me – are neither giving up their biking for no weather circumstance no ..read more

Where To Therapy, Amsterdam? *asking for a friend*

I grew up in an environment where consulting with a psychologist or other mental health professional was considered a last resort. You’d wait until life became unbearable, and then you’d shh shh your way to the therapist’s office. If you weren’t sworn to maximum secrecy you would be served assumptions, judgment and unsolicited advice from those around you. Psychologists were for the crazies. The world I live in today is different: in my bubble, people tend to be open about their mental health challenges, but I don’t think that necessarily translates to society at large yet. We enquired Amsterd ..read more

Things I wish I knew when I started freelancing

Drumroll… I’m celebrating two years of working on my own! Something that began as a backup plan while I found my next full-time job, became my full-time job. I’m so grateful to the version of me who decided to try, even through the uncertainty that being self-employed can bring. I’m proud of her! She was doing her best. As a way to celebrate this path, I’ve chosen to give myself the gift of introspection, the kind of advice that ripens with time.  Looking back, there are a few things I wish I had known when I started. The journey can feel lonely and stressful, but it can also be exciting ..read more

I am a chronically overprepared traveler. I always arrive 3 hours ahead of my flight, even if it’s a short plane ride from Amsterdam to Barcelona. That is how I ended up where I am today, dear guests. I woke up bright and early, ate breakfast, made coffee and off I was, on my way to Schiphol airport in a secondhand denim skirt and a backpack for the week. I’m writing to you now from my Notes app on my phone, due to the unforeseen circumstances of my backpack’s size limits and thus, lack of a laptop. I love typing on a keyboard. I’ve been using computers since I was around 11 years old; typing ..read more

Wild swimming in Amsterdam: a savvy guide for heatwaves

updated September 2023 When I first moved here more than ten years ago, many people I knew were too wary of swimming in an Amsterdam canal. Faces would frown: Oh, it’s so dirty!; I can’t!; If you jump in there you’ll get the plague. But then clīmatē chāngē became a thing we all were in together, and necessity pushed the naysayers – one by one – into the water. Swimming in a canal became a quintessential Amsterdam experience. Never was this website’s name this appropriate. Here’s the good news: Waternet, the company that manages local waters, swears by its quality. Even the Queen swims in it (a ..read more

Back. This blog-turned-magazine is back, and I’m back in Amsterdam. Back. I’m back from my 18-day whirlwind of an August vacation, and I’m back online with Amsterdive. I need vacation from my vacation, because family dynamics are fun like that. So I muscle through emotional shit and start writing. Everything is so apparently different and, at its core, so much the same. The city, myself. Back. You may remember that I retired from Amsterdive in 2021, after roughly 5 years of blogging. Various life-altering instances (split-ups, cancer, pandemic) made urban existence feel irrelevant. I was over ..read more

On being a woman in Amsterdam

In Portugal, where I grew up, there was an unwritten code of conduct for “decent women:” whatever the situation is, Never. Make. The. First. Move. If you date men, that is. It didn’t matter if your intention wasn’t even romantic. You were thinking friendship, or keeping in touch with someone interesting, perhaps worthy of having in your social circle? That was unimportant. Never. Make. The. First. Move. was not something to be argued against. A woman waits, period. Yes, this still happened in the 21st century. The experience of having attempted a first move in the past (or giving the impressio ..read more

Gewoon doen, or what I learned from the Dutch

I’m sitting before a blank page, a white screen staring back at me. I decided I’d finally kick-start the blog this week, despite not having written for a (long) while. Surprisingly, I’ve been able to stick to my decisions lately. Gewoon doen, they say in Dutch. I woke up around 07.30, which felt slightly bizarre. This thing of getting up to the chirping of birds is still quite new to me. Four hours and a yoga class later, I’m sitting at my current favourite coffee place, and ready to start. My mind goes blank for a while. Of course, it does, – I tell myself – that’s nothing new. The reass ..read more

7 x Routes For You To Get Lost In Amsterdam

updated Summer 2023 Routes For You To Get Lost in Amsterdam encapsulates the beginning of Amsterdive, the blog. Moving from Lisbon to Amsterdam in 2012 meant starting to host people on a frequent basis: family, friends, couchsurfers. So I came up with different routes in the city that I could pass on to my people, back then, on a handwritten piece of paper. This blog was born out of my unwavering enthusiasm for the Dutch capital. Ten years after first landing here, people keep asking me for Amsterdam tips for their trip (did it rhyme?) so I keep updating this blog post. They cover the, for me ..read more
