Over-the-Counter Hearing Aids: One Audiologist’s Perspective
Life Lived Forward
by Willow Valley Communities

Over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids are now available for purchase by consumers over the age of 18. This introduction in the hearing aid industry has been covered extensively by various media outlets recently. An overview and review of devices can be viewed here. Overall, I am pleased that OTC hearing aids are available for consumers. Over the years, I have consulted with patients who have marginal to mild hearing loss and cannot justify the cost of even entry-level hearing devices, thus having to “live with it” and struggle in certain listening situations. I researched personal sound amplific ..read more

Which Diet Works Even Better the Longer You Do It?

The most well-published community-based lifestyle intervention in the medical literature is also one of the most effective. CHIP, the Complete Health Improvement Program—now known as Pivio, may be “the most well-published community-based lifestyle interventions in the [medical] literature.” It is also one of the most effective, with clinical changes “approaching those outcomes achieved in [live-in] residential lifestyle programs.” As I discuss in my video The Weight Loss Program That Got Better with Time, CHIP encourages people to transition toward a more whole food, p ..read more

A New Way To Think About The Lifespan
Life Lived Forward
by Dr. Sara Zeff Geber, Ph.D., CRC

For as long as any of us can remember, our chronological age has been front and center in our lives. It started with birthday parties when we were very young and, probably thanks to the greeting card industry, birthday celebrations continue as long as we live – and sometimes beyond. Just last month, some family members and I celebrated that my father would have been 110 on his birthday this year. The list of age-dependent restrictions and exclusions is long and powerful: school eligibility, driver licenses, alcohol purchase, tobacco purchase, incarceration protocols, athletic participation,&nb ..read more

Transforming Experiences of Uncertainty
Life Lived Forward

I have had interesting, increasingly frequent interactions about what may be perceived as a prevalent feeling of uncertainty in recent times.  This theme is also scheduled for a dialogue at a Socrates Café.  Confronting and accepting the unknown may evoke multiple reactions, “I accept what is.”, “This is difficult to deal with.”,  “I am just going to go with the flow”, “What can I do?”, “How long will it last?”, “We’ll find out when we get there!”, “I am awaiting for new possibilities to emerge!”             Experiences of u ..read more

What to Eat to Help with Seasonal Allergies (Hay Fever)
Life Lived Forward

What did a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind study of a food that costs pennies a day for ragweed allergy sufferers find? A “great deal is asked of our immune system. It is firstly required to respond rapidly and violently to invaders, but at the same time limits both the duration of its response and the collateral damage to the host.” Anaphylactic shock, which is “defined as ‘a serious allergic reaction that is rapid in onset and may cause death’”—like when someone with a peanut allergy dies after eating one—is an example of an overactive immune r ..read more

The Best Source of Resveratrol
Life Lived Forward
by Dr. Michael Greger

Is there any benefit to resveratrol? If so, should we get it from wine, grapes, peanuts, or supplements? “Alcohol is a neurotoxin which can cause brain damage…[and] can cause cancer,” so perhaps the “consumption of alcohol…cannot be considered a healthy lifestyle choice” since it’s an addictive carcinogen. Cancer is only killer number two, though. Killer number one is heart disease, so what about the “French paradox”? Doesn’t moderate drinking protect against cardiovascular disease? I discuss this in my video Flashback Friday: The Best Source of Res ..read more

For Older Adults, Where To Live Is A Complicated Question; A New Book Rides To The Rescue
Life Lived Forward
by Dr. Sara Zeff Geber, Ph.D., CRC

As we march through the decades, the question of where to live is generally determined by where our family resides, where we go to school, who hires us, and where we want to raise our kids. When that’s all behind us, what then? Do we stay put in our big suburban homes or our three-story urban townhouses or do we seek out a place that could be more supportive of our older lifestyle? This is the question of the hour for most people in their 60s and beyond. It’s the question many of my clients were struggling with when I was doing retirement coaching. Now there is a resource for sorting through a ..read more

Life Lived Forward
by Diana R

Water plays a vital role in our health and wellbeing. We all know that drinking water regularly is critical for keeping our bodies hydrated, but did you know water activities can also keep us in great shape? Exercise is something we should all do regularly to stay fit, no matter our age. It’s a great way to maintain our health, and it keeps us happy. According to research, older adults who exercise on a regular basis are more optimistic than those who don’t exercise.  However, as we age, certain exercises can become too taxing on our bodies. Not to mention, falls and injuries can happen m ..read more

Rest…It’s More Than Just Doing Nothing
Life Lived Forward
by Tim Hague

As we focus on this challenge to be active every day it is important to realize that rest is more than about doing nothing. It is deliberate. It is you giving yourself the freedom to do what you want with this day with no guilt and no regrets. Exercise without a focused day of rest is akin to the ultra low carb diets that are, for me, simply not sustainable. I can hold my own for awhile but there comes a day when I’m in the grocery store and end up in the car with a giant Snickers bar. I need my carbs, I need my rest. This day is not a bonus day IF you accomplish certain goals. Today is NOT a ..read more
