As of August 1, 2022, Nāhuku (Thurston lava tube) is closed until further notice for structural monitoring and safety. The National Park Service said that data from a crackmeter “revealed that a fracture near a large overhanging rock slab at the apex of the lava tube has narrowed by 2.47 mm since Saturday. Based on recommendations from a geotechnical assessment, as of February 25, 2022 Waipi‘o Valley Road is closed to all visitors due to increased risk of slope and roadway failure. It is no longer possible for visitors to access Waipi‘o Valley beyond the overlook whether on foot, horseback, personal vehicle, atv, or on a commercial tour. The closure includes a camping ban.
