An experience that mirrors my own

The history and lore of my league (the CFCL, which lasted 35 years) and Roto in general has always been one of my favorite parts of the experience, and I’ve still got filing boxes of the standings, roster change reports, etc. going all the way back to our first season in 1984 when record keeping was done by hand and typed up on a manual typewriter. Your book inspired me to dig them out, and I just spent an hour re-living the late 80s & early 90s. I’m fascinated by the development and early days of Roto, so this early part of the book is glorious for me. Your description of the origins of B ..read more

About Mark McGwire

On page 189 of Fantasy Expert, Ron Shandler gives himself a well-deserved pat on the back. “The skills focus that nailed pitching also provided an edge on the batting side. The 1998 Baseball Forecaster projected Mark McGwire to hit 60 HR, a bold bet on the impact of expansion pitchers. Nobody had ever dared to publish a home run projection with a “6” at the front of a two-digit number, but there was more than enough in McGwire’s skills metrics to support it. The projection was still quite a ways short of the 70 homers McGwire actually hit, but it was ahead of the field, which was more importan ..read more

Getting into Tout Wars

My story is unique because I gained entry to Tout Wars without an invite. I was a staff member at RotoJunkie and a regular content contributor, so when Bob Kohm and Byron Cox both had late family issues which popped up to prevent their travel to NYC for the 2007 NL Only draft, they asked if anyone on staff was available to occupy the RotoJunkie seat at the table so the seat would not be lost. I quickly volunteered without thinking because I was sitting on a bazillion travel miles due to my day job, so it was easy for me to get to NYC from Orlando and I thought an auction was an auction and I c ..read more

Wander Franco and the Unanticipated Fallout
Ron Shandler | Fantasy Baseball

In mid-August 2023, Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco was placed on administrative leave for allegations that he had an inappropriate relationship with a minor. As more accusers came forward, his fate grew more and more precarious. As of today, we still don’t know what effect this will have on his career. When that happened, the interior pages of Fantasy Expert had already been finalized for two months. But there was a problem. On the very last page of the book, I speculate about the future of the products I have created. I wrote: “Ron Shandler’s Baseball Forecaster will become obsol ..read more

In mid-August 2023, Wander Franco was placed on administrative leave by the Tampa Bay Rays for allegations that he had inappropriate relationships with minors. As more accusers came forward, it started to look like this could be fatal to his baseball career. Darn shame for a young rising superstar. The problem for me is that I had this little passage on the very last page of Fantasy Expert that speculates about the future of the products I had created. The relevant sentence read: “Ron Shandler’s Baseball Forecaster will become obsolete one day too, likely bought out by an intergalactic gaming ..read more

The fantasy industry has named its 2021 picks for the Rotisserie Hall of Fame: Ryan Braun and Hanley Ramirez. Eligibility for the Roto Hall is based on lifetime and peak Rotisserie dollar earnings, and number of times ranked within the top 15 batters or pitchers during the player’s career. There is no subjectivity or “character clause.” The only criteria are whether a player helped fantasy teams win championships during his career.  Unlike the BBWAA, there is no waiting period for Roto Hall induction. If a player meets all the other criteria, he can be inducted as soon ..read more
