Canyon Sunset

As a photographer, this is the type of light that I absolutely live for: shooting towards the sun low on the horizon, with layer upon layer of glorious hazy, golden light. I visited most of the Desert Drive viewpoints on this afternoon, but it was here at Moran Point that I found that sweet spot of light and composition. Torii Path, Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine

The Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine near Kyoto is a serene, contemplative space… once you get past the madding crowds in the first section of torii gates near the entrance. Most people don’t do the full hike up to the top of Mount Inari, so you can find some solitude with just a little bit of effort. The vermilion gates are amazing photographic subjects, seemingly changing colour dramatically with different light falling on them. We had rain, bright sunshine, and even a little bit of hail during our visit, so we experienced all of their moods! Camera: Canon EOS 7D Lens: Canon EF-S 15–85mm Exposure ..read more

One of the few remaining original feudal-era castles in Japan, the “White Egret Castle” is a spectacular sight from any angle. Here, I’ve tried to get a slightly different view by framing the main keep above a closer roof line. A photo taken while walking to Odaiba-kaihinkōen station on the Yurikamome Line after visiting the mind-blowing TeamLab: Borderless exhibit (not to be missed if you are in Tokyo, though I believe it is moving to a new space by 2023). I love finding symmetry in photos, and this one worked out very nicely indeed. Camera: iPhone 8 Plus Lens: Back lens, 3.99mm at ƒ/1.8 Exposure: ISO 20, 1/1400 sec at ƒ/1.8 ..read more

Camera: Canon 7D Lens: Canon EF-S 15–85mm f/3.5–5.6 Exposure: 5 seconds Aperture: f/16 Focal Length: 15mm ISO Speed: 100 View on Flickr Society6 – Prints from $18 The Alaska Basin is a beautiful sub-alpine meadow in the Teton Range in Wyoming, USA. Sitting at an altitude of around 9,600 feet, it’s an 8-mile hike with 2,500 feet of vertical gain from the nearest trailhead to even get here. I consider myself extremely fortunate to have been given the opportunity to take this photo — with stunning sunset light striking the peaks above the basin — as the night before we arrived ..read more

Collections on Society6

In addition to the maps that I sell in my own online store, I also sell prints (and other products like phone and laptop cases) via the print-on-demand service, Society6. One problem with Society6 to date has been making all the photos I have there easily accessible – older work tends to just “disappear” behind the sheer weight of newer posts. I’ve tried to feature some of my favourite photographs on this site via the “My Photography” post category, but that can only do so much. So it’s with some relief that I note that Society6 has finally implemented “Collections” – their version of photo a ..read more
