Hi Friends! I should probably start off with an apology for my unplanned extended hiatus here. Life has taken many unexpected twists and turns in the face of the pandemic – as I’m sure you can relate. This space has become completely neglected. I’m hopeful that is going to shift in the coming weeks and months, as I do really miss showing up here. But I’m thrilled to finally debut the completed Hood Canal Cottage. I certainly didn’t think it would take more than 16 months to get here. I always go into renovations with the utmost optimism. After five+ years of This Old Victorian, You’d think I’d ..read more

Hello November. Hello friends. Long time, no chat. I looked up recently to realize we’ve arrived at the month that means a lot to me and not only because it’s the month of my birth. November is always when we turn inward, gather friends and loved ones, take stock and pay homage to everything for which we are grateful. If I’m being honest with you, I’ve struggled to feel grateful these past months. Ghosting you here was never my intention. While the reasons I disappeared are complicated and some too personal to share at the moment, ultimately, I became a victim of the pandemic – one of those 5 ..read more

What You Need for a Minimalist Summer Wardrobe

If you’ve been a friend of Apartment 34 for a long time, then you know that we used to talk about fashion – a lot. Fashion was actually my first love – if you hit up the Personal Style section on the site you’ll see, I actually used to get dressed, and enjoy it! I still remember attending my very first show at New York Fashion Week and breaking down in tears – I was so moved. Like what we put in our homes, what we put on our bodies is a powerful tool to not only express who we are, but also who we want to be in the world. As we began to emerge from our pandemic pods and actually leave the hou ..read more

Everything You Need for Your Kitchen & Nothing More

Kitchens. They’re amazing spaces. They can be visually stunning. They must be total workhorses. They’re quite often the heart of the home. But they can also accumulate a lot of CRAP. As I work to not only design but also fully outfit the kitchen for the Hood Canal Cottage, I’m starting completely from scratch. No hand-me-down casserole dishes, no knives I’ve carted around since college, no random herb scissors that I’ve never ever used. For once, I get to hand-select every tool and every object that comes into the space. With that total blank slate, I find myself often thinking (ok, obsessin ..read more

Hi Friends. Well look at that – we’re halfway through April. Turns out, I’m not so great at designing an entire house from top to bottom (and doing it all from 1200 miles away) and blogging about it simultaneously, especially when you toss in pandemic parenting, the continuation of endless cooking and cleaning and attempting to take care of myself on occasion. There just aren’t enough hours in the day and I cannot burn the midnight oil the way I once did (thanks 40’s). As a result, this little ole blog is just getting neglected. For that, I ask your forgiveness. To make it up to you, I’m bring ..read more

I’ve been chugging along on the Hood Canal Cottage design – I know I am SO overdue for an update for you, but when you’re in the throes of design deadlines it can be really hard to find a moment to pause and recap everything. But I swear, it’s coming slowly. In recent weeks I’ve moved on from major architectural design and finish decisions into the interior design side of things. It’s been a tad overwhelming, as I haven’t decorated a space from scratch since we moved to San Francisco nearly 10 years ago (did you ever catch the tour of my first place in SF? I’m almost embarrassed to share it, b ..read more

I’ve been an uber-fan of Dutch designer Faye Toogood for such a long time. Interiors, furniture, fashion – there’s nothing she touches that doesn’t turn to beautiful. Her Roly Poly chair is on the tippy top of my wishlist for the Hood Canal Cottage. As I was internet rabbit holing looking for inspiration for the cottage over the weekend, I stumbled across this apartment on the real estate site The Modern House and was immediately stopped in my tracks. And of course it was designed by Toogood (interesting side note, the co-founder of The Modern House is Toogood’s husband!). This apartment res ..read more

As we dive head first into March (or is that tentatively tiptoe past the PTSD – it can go either way). I for one, am dreaming of the long awaited day when I can actually escape my house. Sadly, the #HoodCanalCottage is far behind schedule (and not just because it took me a month to find the perfect bathroom faucet. We also had to replace the roof!). For now, I have just have to bide my time daydreaming about bucolic rural destinations. Thankfully, this stunning cottage in upstate New York, restored and redesigned by General Assembly, is helping me do just that. As a tried and true modern ..read more

Hi Friend. I certainly didn’t mean to step away from here for such a long stretch. There’s been many a thing keeping me busy lately, from hybrid homeschooling to madly designing the #HoodCanalCottage, not to mention national political near-catastrophe, environmental disaster, and of course this nagging pandemic. The world’s larger turmoil made sharing here feel rather small. Insignificant. Insufficient. We’re all dealing with A. LOT. Carrying so much. It’s been weighing on me. Is it weighing on you too? But I had a shift last week. As as I sat with feeling really sad about all we’ve lost in th ..read more

Easy Christmas Morning Treat

With only four sleeps till Christmas, it’s quite likely your holiday traditions are looking a little different this year. We’re not all gathering at grandma’s house or having a gaggle of cousins over for a raucous Christmas morning. And if you’re like me, this means we can’t rely on our family members to deliver the traditional Christmas morning treats. Thankfully, I was recently introduced to Ali Stafford and her new cookbook, Bread, Toast, Crumbs. You might know Ali from her blog, Alexandra’s Kitchen – she’s got a list of 25 Christmas Cookies I’m currently drooling over. But for now I ..read more
