Hi all! My name is Margaret Poulos and I attend Carroll University in Waukesha, Wisconsin. I am majoring in Early Education, Middle Education, and Special Education, and I am minoring in Psychology, Philosophy, and Sociology. I was actually born and raised in the Chicagoland area, so being back home for student teaching has been quite nice, especially since I plan to be a CPS (Chicago Public School) teacher! I have been placed at Grover Cleveland Elementary School, which is a PreK-8 CPS neighborhood school in Irving Park. I feel so at home in the amazing school community that GC has cultivated ..read more

Reflection from Grace Batronis: A CS English Major
Chicago Semester

Hello! My name is Grace Batronis, and this is the last semester of my junior year as an English major and Fine Arts minor. I’m originally from Rockville, Indiana. I currently attend is Indiana Wesleyan University. My internship this semester is at the Field Museum under the Exhibition Development team, and while I’ve only been in person four times in the last few weeks, it’s hands-down one of the coolest work environments I’ve experienced. I’ve become strangely content with waking up early in the morning and getting out when the sun is barely up. Monday morning, as I was walking to work ..read more

I can’t believe it has almost been 2 months so far. When I first got here, I was excited and just trying to find my way around the city, doing class, and waiting to start my internship. Now I am in my financial planning internship and trying to enjoy everything Chicago has to offer from free concerts to delicious food. My internship at Envision Wealth has gone very well, and I am learning a lot about the field. New challenges at work are something I look forward to. We had a community dinner last week where we got to have everyone from the different disciplines together for deep dish pizza and ..read more

Jessica Daniels ’21 When Jessica Daniels graduated from Howard University (Washington D.C.) in Spring 2021, she had plans to attend law school with her degree in Political Science and Criminology. She knew she needed an internship to help her law school application stand out, but struggled to find an opportunity that both fit her passion for reforming the criminal justice system and also fulfilled her financial needs for the summer. Encouraged by her mentors, Jessica came to Chicago Semester and secured a paid internship as a recent graduate through our City Fellows summer program. We need you ..read more

This is my last week in Chicago! I have not seen the entire city, but what I have seen (and eaten) has been very special to me. I learned so much in my program and made such great friends. I am happy to have been in this program and connected with communities I never would have known (and I say this as someone who lives in the Chicagoland area). In student teaching related news, my students have finished their essays and are now on a poetry unit. I will be leaving them. I am going to miss them so much as they are adorable, sweet sixth graders. Some students are dedicating their poetry to me ..read more

It feels bittersweet knowing this will be the last blog I write for the Chicago Semester program. One thing I know for sure is that I am so grateful to have been on this program. This program gave me the space to process the things I was experiencing at my internship and allowed me to me hear what other social work students encountered at their own placements. I value my social work classmates because we all supported each other in our hardships and celebrated together in our accomplishments. Kendra, my seminar instructor, also made my experience on the program special. She is a great mentor a ..read more

How is it that four months can pass so quickly?? I still am not sure, but here we are at the end of our time in Chicago. I can already say I will miss it terribly, but I will for sure be back at some point. I have been thinking about it and would love to come back to the area for medical school or just to live in the future. We will see what the future holds, but it definitely would be something to consider. The last couple weeks of classes have been really great. It has not been intense, we are mostly wrapping up loose ends and talking about final projects. As crazy as it is, these are my la ..read more

I can’t believe how fast the end of the semester is coming! It really hit me once I booked my plane reservation for California. With the end nearing, I’ll be starting to turn over my current case managements to other staff before my last day next week. It’s a bittersweet feeling because I’ve really enjoyed working with my clients, but I know they will be in great hands with the other case managers. The end also makes me reflect on how much I value my teammates and all the support and guidance they’ve given to me throughout the semester. I also value my supervisor because she’s been a great me ..read more

Hello! This week in my Chicago food journey I am finally working on the list I got from my students about places to go in Chicago. In Gage Park (where my hybrid placement) is I tried Rosa’s Tamales. I tried strawberry tamales and they were so delicious! They were sweet in a subtle way and I had never has tamales before, it was fun to try something new! In student teaching related news, my students have been working on essays related to the book “The Only Road”, as well as finishing their body paragraphs. I have to prepare like crazy for next week (that is when the fourth quarter starts) so th ..read more

Greetings from the rainy Gold Coast! It is certainly springtime in Chi-town! We had a couple of wonderful weather days, but the last week or so has been pretty rainy and cloudy. However, when it was nice, I did have the chance to spend some time outside which was awesome, and the vitamin D was much needed. Classes are winding down as we approach the last few weeks (which is still blowing my mind). I’ve got a few final projects I am currently working on and we are continuing to meet in person. We have continued our conversations about how our communities shape our vocations and we have talked ..read more
