What Do Artificial Waves Mean for the Future of Competitive Surfing?

Could this be the surf contest of the future? Image © Paul Roget Competitive surfing has always been as much about an individuals wave selection as it has about the moves that take place on the wave itself. But that’s all set to change. The ability to read the conditions – mentally analysing and computing the slightest ripples on the surface of the ocean – could become a skill of the past. At least in any competition taking place in an artificial man-made wave, that is. A contest in Kelly Slater’s Californian splash park is imminent. And it’s sure to&nbs ..read more

Why Our Obsession With Documenting Everything is Changing Our Outlook on Surfing
Surfing Sections | Surf Blog & Magazine

Stories round the campfire or an evening huddled around a laptop? The modern philosophy seems to be that if it wasn’t posted on Facebook – then it didn’t really happen. Our obsession with documenting every aspect of our lives and optimizing our memories of all that we do has led to a generation of camera-phone wielding selfie-stick waving lunatics. Concentrating so hard on capturing a snapshot of the moment we are experiencing, we forget to enjoy the moment we are experiencing. But hey, at least there’s a photo to share with virtual friends that we wouldn’t cross the street to chat too. S ..read more

Why Are Surfers Such Miserable Bastards?

Cheer up, at least you’re not playing golf. Last week I picked up a heavy bag of long handled sticks and spent a few frustrating hours zigzagging my way around a large swathe of perfectly manicured green grass. I was attempting to play golf, although I’m not sure my swing and general technique allows me to cite what I was doing as ‘golf’. Yet despite my frustrations, my wildly (sometimes dangerously) inaccurate drives down the fairway were given nothing but positive encouragement. “Ooohs”, “ahhs” and “nice shots” were liberally banded about. A desperately scrambled hack from within a bunk ..read more

Is Surfing Really the Best Hangover Cure?
Surfing Sections | Surf Blog & Magazine

Can surfing help even the worst hangovers? I’m currently sitting at my computer hoping to goodness that the title of this article turns out to hold a shred of truth. Because at this moment in time, I’m writing’s equivalent of a method actor. Living my subject: slightly shaking, fighting off sweeping waves of nausea, cowering from the tiniest slither of light that is somehow managing to sneak its way into the darkened room. Or more simply put: hung-over to hell. Which seems to be the perfect time to explore whether a good dunk in the water is the answer t ..read more

Stay Warm in the Surf this Winter: 6 Ways to Fight the Cold
Surfing Sections | Surf Blog & Magazine

Surfers go to extreme lengths to keep out the cold. For some ocean lovers, it’s approaching the time of year where the water temperature has dropped low enough to start thinking about bringing the gloves, boots and affectionately nicknamed ‘twat caps’ out of summer hibernation. Coldwater surfing requires a whole new level of loyalty. Surfers who only frequent warm waters fail to understand the dedication required to brave the elements when the water temperature has hit rock bottom.     But for those who live on coasts where the best swells come ashore when the water is coldest, consider ..read more

Slick packaging and a variety of buds to fit ears of all sizes. Surfer’s Ear is a condition that the majority of surfers are aware of but usually fail to do anything about. We all know we should look after our ears and are conscious that spending long periods of time in the water isn’t particularly good for the mechanics of our hearing, but how many surfers actually take the time to protect their ears? And those that do are usually doing so retrospectively after irreparable damage has already been done. So how do we protect ourselves? And is it really worth the effort? Well the good peop ..read more

‍Making the transition from intermediate to advanced surfer is a tricky step. And it’s one that isn’t helped by an unwillingness to accept advice. As surfers, we display a reluctance to continue with lessons and are certainly sensitive towards anyone attempting to unpick what is going wrong and daring to make suggestions as to how it can be put right. Yet this hesitancy to seek advice can lead to a lifetime of bad habits. Poor technique can become ingrained, making the journey of improvement infinitely more difficult than it needs to be. ‍Here are 8 tips that every intermediate surfer ..read more

1) Every minute, the equivalent of one garbage truck of plastic ends up in the world’s oceans. Over 8 million metric tons of plastic are being dumped in our oceans each year. 2) Plastic makes up nearly 70% of all ocean litter. 3) A plastic bag was found at the bottom of the Mariana Trench, the deepest point in the ocean, extending 36,070 feet (10,994 meters) down into the Pacific Ocean. 4) 91% of plastic is not recycled.
