Fly Fishing in the Reno-Tahoe area is changing with the start of spring runoff. Pyramid Lake should improve following the spawn and we are looking forward to fishing the lake as the water warms. Truckee River Fly fishing on the Truckee River has continued to be stellar through the beginning of April! Flows have come up slightly and that has fish on the feed. Looking forward into the week, we have a storm system coming in from Friday through around Sunday. Temperatures are expected to drop and this should bring flows on the Truckee down a bit. Truckee River The Truckee River has fished very well in the last few weeks as Spring has begun. Flows and water temperatures are in a very fishable range right now and bug activity has really increased. Bugs that are hatching now include Skwala stoneflies, March Brown mayflies, Blue Winged Olive mayflies, and midges. Both Pyramid Lake and the Truckee River have benefitted from the big storm we received at the end of last week! Fish are moving in shallower at Pyramid Lake- making the typical early spring locations and techniques effective. The Truckee River has come up in flow since the storm and fish are fired up! The last two weeks of fishing in the Reno Tahoe area have been good with the moderate weather. The Truckee River has benefited most from the warmer days while Pyramid Lake has been slow generally speaking. The Truckee River blew out this week on Monday (3/19) but shaped up almost overnight and is fishing really well. On the other hand, Pyramid Lake has been slow but the fish being caught have been nothing short of stellar. The first week of February 2024 was fantastic on both the Truckee River and Pyramid Lake. With a scattering of storms rolling through the region, fishing conditions have changed day to day. The slightly warmer and overcast days have fared best on the river, while the downright nasty days have been best at Pyramid Lake. Pyramid Lake Report Section by Mike Anderson Pyramid Lake may start fishing well earlier than we’re used to, and here’s why. El Niño years are typically warm and wet. On a typical season at Pyramid Lake, one of the factors that makes fishing better in the spring is the warming of the water as days get longer. With an El Niño year water temps rarely drop below 45 degrees keeping the fish “warm” and willing to bite. The trout have also adapted to start spawning based on water temperature.
