EAST MEADOW, N.Y. — Ilya Sorokin will start in net for the New York Islanders in Game 3 of their first-round playoff series on Thursday night at UBS Arena, head coach Patrick Roy confirmed on Wednesday.  “We knew we would have to use both goalies. They’re both sharp,” Roy said. “Varly had a lot of shots the last game so it’ll be good to have someone fresh for tomorrow.” New York’s No. 1 goalie was relegated to the bench for the first two games of the series — Roy opting to go with the hotter Semyon Varlamov, who won seven of his final eight appearances of the regular season to help t ..read more

A Queens teenager shot a neighbor’s dog on Monday while apparently playing with guns, police said. According to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny, the incident unfolded at around 9 a.m. on April 22, when officers from the 106th Precinct rushed to a home on the 155-00 block of Huron Street in Howard Beach. The homeowner told responding officers that her beloved Pomeranian, named Arya, had been shot. She had taken her companion to a veterinarian after she had noticed that it was bleeding and in pain. “She brought the dog to the vet and the vet told her that the dog been shot. Eight months after ordering most city agencies to dramatically cut their spending, Mayor Eric Adams on Wednesday unveiled a $111.6 billion budget plan that restores some slashed funding — but still leaves areas such as the city’s public libraries on the chopping block. Hizzoner’s Fiscal Year 2025 executive spending plan clocks in at roughly $2 billion more than his preliminary budget released in January and $4 billion greater than this year’s adopted budget. The plan’s release kicks off another round of City Council hearings examining it and negotiations between the two sides of City Hall to a ..read more

Zendaya and stars of ‘Challengers’ talk about film’s steamy love triangle on the tennis court

How sexy can a qualifying tennis tournament in New Rochelle be? When the on-court drama involves Zendaya, Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist, the answer turns out to be quite a bit more than your average USTA singles match in Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers.” The film, directed by Guadagnino from a script by playwright Justin Kuritzkes, may have the appearance of a sports movie. Much of the action happens in between baselines. There are break points and short shorts. But in Guadagnino’s film, what’s being volleyed isn’t just a fuzzy little yellow ball. “The ball is the ephemeral, invis ..read more

No, TikTok will not suddenly disappear from your phone. Nor will you go to jail if you continue using it after it is banned. After years of attempts to ban the Chinese-owned app, including by former President Donald Trump, a measure to outlaw the popular video-sharing app has won congressional approval and is on its way to President Biden for his signature. The measure gives Beijing-based parent company ByteDance nine months to sell the company, with a possible additional three months if a sale is in progress. If it doesn’t, TikTok will be banned. So what does this mean for you, a Ti ..read more

Op-ed | NY lawmakers deserve credit for protecting Medicaid

With a state budget now enacted, hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that their care remains intact. The recently concluded budget session in Albany saw managed long-term care (MLTC) plans fight for their survival after some lawmakers proposed a bill that would have scrapped the program. Luckily, this misguided effort was unsuccessful and the elimination of the MLTC program was excluded from the final budget signed into law by the governor. The preservation of MLTC, a Medicaid-funded system, is particularly timely in April, which is Medicaid Awareness Mont ..read more

Columbia University protests: Admin gives students 48 hours to clear encampment, demonstrators agree to some concessions

Columbia University administrators have told pro-Palestine protesters encamped on their lawn for the past week to voluntarily leave within 48 hours, or be subject to removal.  Negotiations seemed to break down late Tuesday night when Columbia administrators apparently gave the encampment a midnight deadline, mere hours, to disperse or they would be cleared out. This came after the school called the NYPD onto the campus last week in a historic move that saw the arrest of more than 100 demonstrators, and seemingly sparked similar protests at other institutions of higher learning across the ..read more

Bronx detectives are searching for a perp who fatally shot one man and left another one in critical condition on Tuesday night.  Officers from the 46th Precinct responded to a 911 call, as well as an alert from the city’s Shot Spotter system, of two people shot in front of a two-story building at 2449 Morris Ave. in Fordham at approximately 9:49 p.m., law enforcement sources said. ShotSpotter is the NYPD’s network of sensors designed to detective possible sounds of gunfire, and evoke a rapid response. When cops arrived at the scene, officers found a 33-year-old male with gunshots to his s ..read more
