Saying Goodbye to Chippy

When a friend had a litter of kittens, of course I wanted to go see them. Just a visit. We didn’t need another pet, so I wasn’t intending to take one. ….But wouldn’t it be fun to have a new kitten, a loving lap cat? Dustin said no. So I brought this unsanctioned kitten home the next week :) We’d been watching Tim and Eric Awesome Show around this time, and when I walked in with this fuzzy little tabby, our roommate, Tommy, said “Hey, you got a little Chip Chip!” (a bit from the show) No other name seemed to fit, so she’s just always been Chip Chip / Chippy. One line from that show was “Where ..read more

When conditions are right, snowy winter pet portraits can be beautiful – even magical! Fresh, fluffy snow, sparkly sunshine, evergreens and tall dried grass… gorgeous! But here in Minnesota, there are a few extra considerations when planning your outdoor winter dog photography session. It’s easy to schedule your outdoor photo sessions in the spring, summer and fall. Most of the time the weather is pleasant and there might be flowers blooming or vibrant fall colors. We may need to reschedule if it’s raining or dangerously hot, but in general there’s not much to worry about. Winter brings some d ..read more

We’ve finally been getting some rain in Minnesota, and it got me thinking about a drizzly shoot we did for our friends at Gold Paw Series, so I wanted to share it! Not only do they have an amazing selection of fleece apparel, collars, harnesses and leashes, but they also offer beautiful rain gear for dogs! Keep your pup dry and happy on rainy walks with their non-toxic, non-noisy waterproof Rainpaw jacket. We had a great time photographing this item both in studio and on location ..read more

Preparing Your Cat for a Photo Session

A professional portrait session for your cat doesn’t have to be complicated, but there are a few things to consider when booking your session and to prepare for the actual event. Where will the session take place? For many cat owners (myself included!) our cats only leave the house for the occasional vet visit. Whether or not to bring your cat to a different location for their session is completely dependent on your cat’s personality. Are they easy to get into the carrier, or is it a struggle? Are they calm in the car and confident in new places, or do they get very stressed and fearful? Consi ..read more

As the song goes, sometimes it snows in April. And when your snow-loving schnauzer is looking cute in the backyard covered in the stuff, you break out the camera for an impromptu photo session! She was very busy looking for squirrels and buns and didn’t have much time for my picture nonsense, but I think it was definitely worth it ..read more

Over the past decade+ the number of people offering professional pet photography services has grown exponentially, not just in the Minneapolis / St. Paul area, but all over the world. While many of those have come and gone, there are still a LOT of us out here, and wading through the options can be overwhelming. Especially if you’re doing your initial search when you don’t have much time left with your beloved pet. I wanted to give you a bit of an inside look into the world of pet photography, and some tools to help you make decisions. There’s no perfect photographer for everyone, but chances ..read more

Podcast about pet memorial photography

My friend Holly started this amazing podcast – The Everything Pup – that covers all kinds of issues from food to training to products and more, so you can be an informed advocate for your pet. She asked me to be a guest on her show to talk about my Joy Sessions, and while I was nervous to do it, I’m so glad I did! We talked about what pet memorial photography is all about, who it’s for, when’s the right time to do it, and some of my favorite products to remember your pets. I might be biased, but it’s a pretty great episode, and I’d love for you to have a listen! If the embedded episode doesn’t ..read more

Grief and the value of end-of-life pet photography

If you’re familiar with my work, you already know that my Joy Sessions are the heart of what I do. I’ve photographed every life stage from very small puppies and kittens to the final hours (or even minutes!) before it’s time to say goodbye. The nature of this work gives pet owners a built-in compassionate ear to listen and shoulder to cry on. And for some, I may have been the only one in their lives who truly understood what they were going through. There have been many sessions that end with an additional half hour or more just sitting and chatting about their pets and our shared experiences ..read more

Wishing for spring

Hello, friends! You may have noticed that there haven’t been any blog posts here since my dear Gracie passed away in the fall. It turns out that, when you’re grieving, it’s far easier to binge watch tv shows and eat ice cream than it is to update websites and write blogs. The gloomiest January in decades didn’t help either. Having something to look forward to is important, and – for me right now – that’s the spring. I want to open the windows and plant flowers and be outside without a coat and boots. To deep-clean and declutter and simplify. Each spring feels like a fresh start and I ..read more
