Sara Curran, Jerald Herting, Nathalie Williams, and Zack Almquist are leading a team of sociologists, and graduate and undergraduate students in an interdisciplinary study called the Sound Data pilot. The program includes a diverse team of UW investigators with expertise in sociology, geography, anthropology, public health, social work, demography, and public policy.  Using innovative respondent driven sampling, initial data was collected from 280 people experiencing homelessness in the Puget Sound area. Projects address current issues, and the research outcomes have a direct impact on the organizations and communities they serve. The instructor acts as a project manager and supervisor, guiding student work throughout the quarter. Ramin Jabbarli, UW Sociology graduate student and researcher, took part in “Human Rights Situation in Iran: The Case of Ethnic Azerbaijanis” at the 32nd Economic Forum in Karpacz, Poland on September 7.  The panel gathered several experts from all over the world. Jabbarli discussed the discriminatory attitude of different governments in Iran toward the South Azerbaijanis over the decades: the Persianization policy, change of toponyms, lack of education in mother tongue, and economic discrimination.
