Do you know how many missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA1 people are in what is now called “Canada”? Shockingly, it appears that the police do not. In a recent article in Gender & Society, Jerry Flores and Andrea Román Alfaro investigate the inadequate response of law enforcement agencies to such crimes and the ways police (in)actions serve to make sense of, justify, and/or dismiss this epidemic of violence. Drawing on data from 48 interviews with Indigenous peoples and 219 testimonies from the Canadian National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women an ..read more

In her Winter 2024 Contexts feature, “Pushing Back on ‘Black Don’t Crack,’” Dr. Alicia Smith-Tran explores the ways age, gender, and race intersect to produce unique binds—and additional unseen labor—for professional Black women. “I think the broader public certainly thinks of looking youthful as the ideal,” she explains, but that’s not always the case, “depending on who you are and how you present to the world ..read more

Dr. Sofya Aptekar is the author of the Winter 2024 feature article “Green Card Soldiers.” In this video, she chats with Contexts graduate student editor Colter Uscola about why she wanted to publish with our journal and what she hopes readers will take away from her research. Aptekar finds that “citizenship is not actually that primary in why immigrants enlist in the military,” in the U.S., but that citizenship–or the lack thereof–“ends up shaping their experience in the military” and beyond. Read, download, and share Dr. Aptekar’s article at: https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/epdf/10.1177/153 ..read more

Right now, major North American media outlets are buzzing with excitement over the emergence of ground-breaking weight loss drugs like Ozempic. As treatments proliferate, however, the causes (and potential consequences) of obesity remain the topic of heated debate. In Social Science & Medicine, researchers Jaeun Lim and Benjamin Cornwell consider the likelihood of obesity in relation to social networks and individuals’ positions within them. Using data from a longitudinal national survey, Lim and Cornwell investigate the association between participants’ body mass index (BMI) and their “st ..read more

While dogs have long been our best friend, a recent paper by Nicolo P. Pinchak and colleagues suggests that they also are a neighborhood’s best friend. The mere presence of dogs in neighborhoods, they find, plays a role in deterring urban crimes. The study, published in Social Forces, draws on extensive market survey data that captures the presence of dogs in households across different neighborhoods in Columbus, OH. The authors discover that neighborhoods with a higher density of dogs have lower incidences of robbery and homicide. This association is particularly noticeable in neighborhoods w ..read more

“Just recently martial arts has opened up, wearing masks and staying six feet away,” teenager Ryan told us. It was May 2020, the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. Despite widespread social distancing measures, Ryan explained that it hadn’t been so difficult to continue to stay active and participate in his favorite activities with friends. Ryan’s mother, Nicole, was clearly proud of her son’s adherence to social distancing guidelines. She was also proud of how her neighbors in the relatively wealthy and liberal community of Greenville had responded to the crisis. Nicole con ..read more

Why did Motorville stay blue?

I first met Isaac in September of 2019. Though it was still early in the fall, the weather had already turned cold in his hometown of Motorville, Wisconsin. A middle-aged White man, Isaac worked a blue-collar union job—just as his father had before him. In that way, Isaac was like many residents of this small, Midwestern city with its roots in shipping and extractive industries. He also shared many of his neighbors’ political views: Isaac was a self-proclaimed lifelong Democrat. In his view, being a Democrat was all about using the government to redress economic inequality. He articulated this ..read more
