Well the Weston Craft Show was a success!  The new temporary venue at The Theater at Walker Farm was convenient, well laid out and welcoming.  Customer turnout was good as were sales.  Most craftspeople hope we can use it again next year if repairs to the big theater aren’t finished yet. Thank you to all my customers, to the Craft Show Committee and especially Sara, and to the Theater at Walker Farm! Here are a few photos of my booth and the main room ..read more

I recently completed an interesting commission for a client who teaches needlework.  She holds classes during which people learn new needlework skills by working on projects. She had seen photos of an old Nantucket whirlygig that appeared to be made of wood and she redesigned it to allow the body to be made using needlework techniques.  There was still a need for some wooden parts however, so she contacted me several months ago asking if I would be interested in producing them.  I said I would and set out to find ways to make them efficiently since each project kit required six ..read more

Yesterday afternoon, as the second week in May began, I watched snow falling outside my office window while entering final grades for the students in my woodturning classes.  I guess spring is still on the way. The classes I teach are offered by Green Mountain College and are one credit “intensives” designed to give students a quick overview of a particular subject. The students get 14 hours of class time and are responsible for additional work outside of class with the goal being to produce both a turned bowl and a carved spoon.  Many of these students have never worked with wood or ..read more

Signs of Spring!

Punxsutawney Phil predicted an early spring back in February. Here in Vermont, we don’t have groundhogs.  We have woodchucks, and they don’t pretend to be able to predict the weather. They just eat our gardens. However, one good sign that spring is on the way is the emergence of snowdrops seen here under the rosebush by the barn. The warm weather has had another effect which is that I can be in my shop without freezing my appendages off and can even have the door open for a while! I’ve had a few large chunks of wood ready to turn for some time.  They have been in plastic bags and go ..read more
