Hi, I’ve been working as a school-based OT at the same district for 6 years now. Im very comfortable there but honestly the drive is very far (50 mins each way). I got an offer from a district much closer (10 mins) but there will be a $3K paycut and the insurance benefits are meh (I still get the same pension plan though). I’m very conflicted on what to do. Now, the driving is exhausting and when i come home, I’m cranky and don’t hVe energy for much either. Any advice? Edit: I asked to match my current salary but the wages are already set between union and board, so it’s non-negotiable.

Hi everyone! Just passed my boards and currently applying for licensure. I applied to an acute care job in a major city through a recruiting agency and was told I basically shouldn’t waste my time applying to acute care or inpatient jobs because they are so competitive in this area. I told the recruiter I had interest in outpatient peds and possibly schools as well and he suggested I focus on those. However, how am I supposed to get acute care experience if I’m always in peds roles and this is something I really want to do? I did my level IIs in acute care and outpatient peds. I asked him if ..read more

I'm working with an autistic kiddo who has just commenced kindergarten in a support unit.
Their mother has been called into school for a meeting regarding a different issue.
However, during the meeting, the principal apparently announced their desire to have the child learn to transition between various spaces, and to sit with their class during circle time. Managing transitions is fair, but the latter feels like a little much to ask for so soon and at a time that is already loaded with new expectations, people, and settings.
I personally feel that circle time is a complex and multifaceted ex ..read more

I’m an honors student finishing my bachelors degree. I’ve double majored in Psychology and Communications. I had planned to become a psychiatrist because human behavior fascinates me and I want to help people, but I ultimately decided against it because of the growing problems of pop psychology and a broken mental health system that works against the people who need it.
My university offers a 3 year Bachelors to OTD program for 55k. I felt this was a fantastic fit for me upon looking into the field, I could connect with people one on one and help them. I changed my entire career track and hav ..read more

Hi everyone, I am a student on a level 1 fieldwork experience. I'm making this post to ask for advice for a client I have been working with at my site. The client is an adult ~30yrs, is nonverbal, and has severe IDD and ASD. They have a communication device that has been personalized (has pictures of them, family members, familiar items, etc) but they will *only* use it to request food. I have tried to initiate conversations using the device, but the client will only use the food category. The staff members at this site told me that they have been having difficulty with this client for a lot ..read more

For you high school based therapists out there. What would you do if you were evaling a kiddo in high school for handwriting and fine motor deficits, and the kid is literally coming to school high as a kite every single day. All your testing obviously comes back low because the kid is getting high before school and at school, causing his fine motor to be super slow and jacked up. Could be using alcohol too. Kicker is that the kid has no support at home. Not a good situation. Looking for some advice and thoughts on how to handle the situation

I am currently doing my bachelors in recreation therapy and I’m looking to do my masters in occupational therapy. I know this question can vary depending on a person. I was looking at job postings and I see that the pay varies depending on where you work. For example, hospitals vs contract work. I also noticed there’s a difference between hourly pay and salary. Can anyone let me know the benefits of working at a hospital compared to private practice, contact work or any setting in general. As well, the pay in each setting and what setting is the most rewarding regarding that.

Hi everyone, I hope you’re doing well. I had a question if there’s anyone on here who has changed careers or who has a part-time career that is not a part of occupational therapy can you please share what it is and what you do. I recently a hand injury and I’m concerned that I won’t be able to work as an occupational therapist for long. I just wanna explore my options to see if there are other things that I could do with this degree
