AD | A Low Waste & Cruelty-Free Product Stash for the Shower

AD: PR Sample—the Poapoa soap in this post was gifted to me by the brand. Last October I wrote about what I’ve been doing to create a more sustainable shower routine. Today I thought I’d do a follow-up, and take a closer look at some of the products I’ve been buying (and repurchasing—there are a few repeats). Everything is from cruelty-free brands (except the knitted soap pouch below, which was a handmade gift). I try to buy vegan products wherever possible. Note that vegan and cruelty-free aren’t the same. Vegan means there are no animal derived ingredients; cruelty-free means no animal testi ..read more

Reflecting On My Goals & Kickstart 2020

You hardly need me to announce that 2020 hasn’t turned out the way anyone expected. But for the purpose of this blog post, I’m going to, because today I’m looking at my goals and how lockdown has impacted them. It’s okay, I won’t spend the whole time feeling sorry for myself. Something I’ve learned is to only worry about things I have control over (or try to only worry about things I have control over. It’s a work in progress). I can’t control the fact we’re in the middle of a pandemic, but I can stay home as much as possible to keep myself and others safe. I can’t control the fact my goals ma ..read more

6 Days of Meals from Cook, Share, Eat Vegan by Aine Carlin

Aine Carlin’s recipe books were my gateway into vegan cooking. I came across her column a couple of years ago when I used to read Veggie magazine, and bought her recipe book The New Vegan out of curiosity. Many of the meals in there have become staples for me, from the spicy stovetop beans to the chickpea sandwich filler, which I always think of as the chickpea smush. I bought her other two books—Keep It Vegan and Cook, Share, Eat Vegan—in quick succession. Since Cook, Share, Eat Vegan is the one I’ve used the least, I decided it was time to dive in properly, as I’ve recently been furloughed a ..read more

Once again I’m re-evaluating the way I approach shopping for clothes. I’ve been trying to phase out fast fashion for a couple of years now, with mixed success: I have a list of tried-and-tested ethical brands I tend to buy from when I need something, and I’ve started shopping second-hand on Depop. (I found an amazing pair of silver ankle boots that were never worn by their original owner.) But sometimes there’s no avoiding the pitfalls. I still fall into the trap of wanting to buy something new, I’m partial to window shopping online—although I have unsubscribed from a tonne of newsletters—and ..read more

Lily Lolo Big Lash | Cruelty Free Mascara Review + The Joy of Wearing Make-Up At Home

Mascara is a tricky one. And if you’re looking for a cruelty-free mascara, your options are a little more limited (though thankfully there are still plenty out there!) Add in personal preferences—do you want length or volume? Both? A big brush or a delicate one? Something waterproof?—and the selection narrows even more. That’s why it feels so good when you finally find one that does everything you want. I never used to be loyal to one brand, so I’ve tried a lot over the years: Urban Decay, Barry M, Gosh, PHB Ethical Beauty, Glossier, NYX. Most of them have been good enough—but not amazing. And ..read more

9 Things I’ve Been Doing During Lockdown
Toasty

You’ve had my take on working from home in a productive way. Now for a more light-hearted, less practical post. Unless you’re a key worker (and if you are, then you’re incredible and deserve better), chances are you’ve found yourself with more time on your hands. Going out isn’t an option, so we’ve all had to create new routines while we stay put at home, in order to keep cabin fever at bay. Here are nine things I’ve been doing during lockdown. 1. Cleaning and decluttering Not just a light dusting of everything, oh no. My glass spray bottle has never seen so much action in such a short space o ..read more

The Importance of Good Company

I’ve always thought of myself as a classic introvert. I’m perfectly content spending time on my own. I need space to recharge after social events. I often find large gatherings overwhelming. And yet… I’ve been social distancing for just over two weeks now, and I miss being around other people. Really miss it. (For context: I’m living with my parents and brother while I save for a flat deposit, and I’m very glad to be with them while the coronavirus pandemic is happening. By other people, I mean my extended family, my friends, and my co-workers.) It hit me the first time my friends and I did ou ..read more

8 Ways to Stay Happy and Productive When Working From Home
Toasty

The coronavirus pandemic means a lot of us will be working from home over the coming weeks. For some people, it’s business as usual (I would normally split my time between home and the office). For others, it’s new territory. I’m lucky I work for a company who allow us to work from home when we want, which is a lifesaver for me because a) I can get bad fatigue as a side effect from my medication and b) it takes about an hour and a half to get to work if I do go in. I’m hoping one of the good things to come from the virus—I’m searching for any silver linings I can—is that more workplaces become ..read more

How do I stop always wanting more?

How do I stop always wanting more? This question has been spinning around my head a lot lately. On the one hand, wanting more has led to success: a first-class degree, the opportunity to live abroad, a recent promotion (*pats self on back*). But on the other, it also means I’ve always got a list of things I want. Some of them are necessary—wanting to be more involved with client communications at work makes sense because I’ll have to step out of my comfort zone—and some of them are not. Heaven knows I do not need another face mask or stripy top. I guess by ‘more’, I mean material things. While ..read more

My Low Waste Beauty Rules for 2020
Toasty

I’ve been thinking about how I can refine my approach to low waste living. After making over my budget for this year so I can save for a deposit, it became very clear to me that the biggest area I can cut down on is beauty—both the amount I buy and the kind of products I buy. While I’ve taken big steps to reduce the amount of plastic I use, I still buy a lot each month. But the most low waste (zero waste, even) thing you can do is buy nothing at all. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t get a high from ordering something new (a pattern which started when I first got my student loan back in the day ..read more
