ALBUM REVIEW: “For You, Now” is Winkler’s dreamy debut
Boston Hassle | Music
by Kyle Serena
1y ago
If you were looking for something to scratch that dreamy indie rock itch then look no further. Winkler, Boston’s own indie-pop-meets-garage-rock oddballs, have finally released their debut record “For You, Now.” This debut is a labor of love,  perfectly showcasing in just 8 songs the sound Winkler has honed and refined since their founding in 2018. It’s great fun upon every listen and well worth the long wait.  Album Cover   In keeping with the lo-fi vintage sound of prior Winkler releases, the songs feel layered and lush with the homespun warmth of tape machines and 4 track r ..read more

Harmony and Alex “Hollow Day” Single Review
Boston Hassle | Music
by Owen Murray
1y ago
“Hollow Day,” the first collaborative single from HARMONY AND ALEX, blends the artfulness of freak-folk with the directness of folk-punk. The two Boston artists, Harmony Pulaski and Alex Walton, perform live with effortless chemistry in the Pulaski-fronted band, Harmony’s Cuddle Party. With “Hollow Day,” and its accompanying video, the duo translates the humor and heart that define their performances to songwriting and recording. Melodic synths accompany layers of unrelenting acoustic guitar and driving percussion, complimenting the song’s melding of angst and hope. Harmony and Alex create a f ..read more

The Ever-Evolving Champagne Charlie & The Wah Wahs
Boston Hassle | Music
by Emma DeLaRosa

A firecracker band whose beginnings were stalled by the pandemic, Champagne Charlie & The Wah Wahs have proven themselves to be solid, ambitious and adaptable. The band was first formed in late 2019 and, although its lineup has changed, founding members Brady Dallas Jones and Mike Petillo remain. Champagne Charlie now consists of Dallas Jones, Petillo, Ben Andrade and Gabryl Adarne – as well as several “auxiliary members” who play either when they are available or when performance calls for their role.  The band’s influences are The Beatles, The Beach Boys and Bruce Springsteen, refer ..read more

Together, We Can Bring Urine Hell to Boston
Boston Hassle | Music
by Abbie Bateman

There is something incredibly special about noise rock shows in cramped, clamoring dive bars. The raw energy of these scenes is simply unmatched anywhere else in our world. I suppose it reminds me most of hardcore shows – the same energy, but with a lot less unbecoming seriousness. Spectators have begun catching on to this reality and it’s allowing noise rock to have its moment in the spotlight. While the intentional dissonance of the genre brings much critique from those who feel “anyone can do it,” the reality is most performers don’t have the sauce. Urine Hell There is something tormented ..read more

Stop What You’re Doing, Listen to Intercourse

It is so infrequent in this life that we thoroughly enjoy every precious moment. True love… so rare. Yet, for all of us, there is Connecticut’s Intercourse. If you’ve ever met me in person, I’ve probably forced you to listen to their music. You’re welcome. View this post on Instagram   A post shared by BatemanInBondage (@pleasurethreat_) If you somehow missed the memo, Interourse is Tarek Ahmed (vocals), Peter Stroczkowski (bass), Caleb Porter (drums), and Sean Prior (guitar). The group was born in 2014 and has gone through some line-up changes leading us to the foursome we know ..read more

Clifford the Band delivers collaborative collage on new EP “Surface Tension”
Boston Hassle | Music
by Jack O'Grady

The dictionary definition of Surface Tension is the, “tendency of liquid surfaces at rest to shrink into the minimum surface area possible,” which doesn’t like much fun. An alternative interpretation is that Surface Tension is the capacity for a form as small and ephemeral as a single drop of water to cradle a universe of atomic possibility without becoming anything but more of itself. Imagine raindrops collecting on the sheer edge of a roof, droplets colliding and combining, capturing the flow of time for a tense moment before shattering into something entirely new as they tumble into the gra ..read more

Get Up to Speed on NE Powerviolence Icons Wound Man
Boston Hassle | Music
by Abbie Bateman

I recently went to Dublin with my best friend. I dragged her through every record store in town, searching the racks for the one souvenir I sought – a local punk or powerviolence tape. At one such shop I asked the young man behind the counter where the powerviolence could be found… he replied asking “who is powerviolence.”   Though I was nonplussed by his seemingly astounding ignorance, I must admit the genre is not one of incredible reputation outside of its dark corner in hardcore’s vast underworld. I simply spend my life submersed in it.   Wound Man, photo from Trevor V ..read more
