DJI has made its first foray into the lucrative action cam market with the launch of its new Osmo action cam. GoPro has dominated the action cam market more than a decade. Although other players such as Sony, TomTom and Garmin have had their own offerings, in this industry, GoPro reigns supreme. Does DJI’s new offering stand any chance of dethroning the king of action cams?  In December, DJI released the Osmo Pocket and that was met with great reviews and solid sales. In the mini /blog cam market, however, DJI, didn’t face any competitor with anything like the dominance that GoPro enjoys in a ..read more

Last week in Russia, we caught a rather terrifying glimpse of what the future of drone warfare could look like. Russsian defense contractor, Almaz-Antey, was recently awarded a patent for their shotgun-wielding drone. Almaz-Antey is a big player in the Russian arms industry. They are responsible for producing, among many armaments, some of the world’s most advanced surface-to-air missile systems. Key info about this drone The fixed-wing craft sports a Vepr-12 shotgun along with a 10-round magazine. It weighs 50 pounds (22.6 kg) and has a flight time of 40 minutes. Facebook axed scheme to provide free internet using bird-sized drones

In 2017, Facebook imagined a scheme that used fixed-wing, bird-sized drones to provide high-speed internet to people living in remote areas. Business Insider reports that the project, named Catalina (named after an island in California that uses pigeons to ferry messages back to the mainland) was shut down in 2018. The aim of the project was to make it easier for people living in isolated places to stream videos or undertake other data-intensive tasks on their mobile devices. The drones proposed for the Catalina project were to be the size of sparrows and would have contained solid-state drive ..read more

A couple arrested by Sussex police on suspicion of flying drones over Gatwick Airport have been released without charge. The Guardian reports that the couple, a 47-year-old man and 54-year-old women were released due to their “cast-iron, watertight alibi.” The pair, who were held by police for a marthon 35 hours, may now seek compensation from various media outlets for damages after multiple British newspapers identified them, despite them not being charged with anything. Morning television host Piers Morgan referred to them as “terrorists” shortly after they were taken into custody (although ..read more

Brilliant ‘morphing quadcopter’ rapidly changes shape to fit through gaps

Researchers at the University of Zurich in Switzerland have constructed a search and rescue quadcopter capable of shapeshifting in order to pass through narrow spaces. Referred to as a ‘morphing quadcopter’, this is the second iteration of the design. The team behind the drone were inspired by the way birds can hold their wings flat against their body to fly through gaps. The drone’s ability to change shape is intended to help it navigate through cracks or gaps as rapidly as possible and access areas that would otherwise be inaccessible. This makes it a great tool for searching survivors durin ..read more

Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have developed autonomous search and rescue drones that can collaboratively navigate through dense forest , even without GPS. The MIT research group worked on the project alongside the NASA Langley Research Center and have just presented their findings to the International Symposium on Experimental Robotics (ISER) in Buenos Aires. When people get lost in heavily forested areas, it is often near-on impossible for search and rescue aircraft to spot a lost person through the forest canopy.  The innovations created by the MIT team me ..read more

Could origami help protect your drone from taking damage?

How do you protect your drone from taking damage when you fly? Aside from obvious: avoiding crashing, you should also fly to the conditions, steer clear of obstacles and attach the prop guards that usually come with your drone (although let’s face it: most people won’t because they generally make a drone look worse). What about when your drone actually does crash into something? It can’t always be helped, especially because drone sensors aren’t always able to detect. An accident can quickly the spell the end of your UAV or at very least, costly repairs. Scientists from Imperial College London ..read more

Researchers from the University of Dayton, Ohio, have conducted a controlled trial to demonstrate the damage wayward drones can inflict on airplanes. We know this isn’t always the most popular topic with readers (because it apparently brings negative attention towards drones and their owners) but it is important to highlight some of the dangers associated with moronic drone behavior. The footage released by the university shows a popular DJI Phantom 2 colliding into a wing from a Mooney M20, four-seater aircraft. A wing from Mooney M20 plane, such as the one pictured above, was used to test th ..read more

A French startup is using drones paired with 3D technology to recreate digital representations of monuments destroyed during the war in Syria. The group, called Iconem, have been operating since 2013 and specialize in the digitization of endangered cultural heritage sites in 3D. These digital representations are not only a way of preserving sites that are lost but can be used as a basis for rebuilding the monuments once there is sufficient peace in the region to do so. Syria’s civil war began in 2011 between the Assad-led government and multi anti-government, rebel groups. Now in it’s eighth y ..read more
