Perfection from La Mer
Bluemercury - Marla's Beauty Blog

I can't figure out what La Mer's new The Perfecting Treatment is, but I love it! Moisturizer? Mask? Extra thick serum? Soothing, cooling and incredibly hydrating, this "perfect" light gel cream is an amazing pick-me-up for when your skin looks dull.    I love it at night post-shower - I just slather it on and wait for the instant dewy look. I also could see using it over an intense glycolic treatment as a light soother/hydrator. Or in the morning on those days you just throw up your hands and say, I have no idea what to do with my tired, dull skin ..read more

Ingredient Spotlight: I Love Coconut Oil!
Bluemercury - Marla's Beauty Blog

Coconut oil is having a moment. We see it everywhere from the grocery store to our smoothies (I cook with Nutiva organic coconut oil), and now, our beauty products. What people don’t know is that coconut oil has been a beauty cure-all long before it became a trend.    Tropical regions where coconuts grow natively have used coconut oil as a natural moisturizer and anti-inflammatory for thousands of years. Aside from its summertime scent, coconut oil is rich with nourishing vitamins E and K. Its make-up of saturated fats leave skin hydrated, soft and supple, and antioxidants calm and soothe ..read more

Happy Mother's Day!
Bluemercury - Marla's Beauty Blog

Mother’s Day is one of my favorite days. Not because I have a big brunch celebration or get great gifts. It just reminds me of my mom. And it reminds me of how much I love being a mom. My mom is partially responsible for my love of beauty products. She always hoarded samples from the department store cosmetics counters. I remember the miniature yellow Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotions from Clinique, the glamorous La Prairie samples that I was not allowed to touch, and the Chanel No. 5 vials. After I started Bluemercury, I got her hooked on La Mer and she swore the original Crème ..read more

Mask Mania - Which Mask Is Right For You?

Masks are back! Masks – which have been around since the Brady Bunch – are back. I keep asking myself why and here is what I think: they are targeted treatments that fix your skin for whatever is bothering you at that exact time. Post-Travel: We all know the feeling - You just took a trip and feel grimy and dirty from the airplane's recycled air – Use a deep cleansing clay mask. I love Bobbi Brown's new Instant Detox Mask ($47) with Hawaiian Sea Water & White Clay. Winter Blues: Parched and dry skin from wind or cold can be irritating and uncomfortable– use the heavenly Fresh Ro ..read more

Resort travel during the winter is not my favorite. I am pale and pasty, and the last thing I want to do is get into a bathing suit. I popped into our Bluemercury store in Bethesda to stock up on winter pick-me-ups for resort travel. Here are some of my secrets: 1. Travel with lots of sunscreens. I believe you should have the right sunscreens for the right time of day. I love Clarins’ new Multi-Active Day Cream Broad Spectrum SPF 20 for morning breakfast with the kids. It rehydrates and pre-hydrates before an active, sun-filled day. After breakfast, I will jump up my sunscreen level with ..read more

I love a good palette. They just make life easier. Compact, easy to travel with, and beautiful to look at - here are three of my newest favorites: 1. The By Terry Sun Designer Palettes in No. 1 and No. 2 are very Missoni. 2. The NARS Laguna Tiare Bronzer actually smells like Tahitian Manoi, so you get bronzed and feel like you’re on a tropical island at the same time. 3. The Laura Mercier Extreme Neutrals Eye Palette is full of neutrals but also has the beautiful lavenders – which wear well with ethereal white for summer time.  I love spring!! Last week I went out to Aspen skiing with Barry and the kids for spring break. I always bring a ton of products for the cold, dry weather and this time I packed almost a whole suitcaseful – who knows what I would need in my toolkit.   For the first two days I used the basics – SkinCeuticals Physical Fusion UV Defense SPF 50 on me (I like the tint to even out my skin tone), and SkinCeuticals Sheer Physical UV Defense SPF 50 on the kids and Barry.  Everyone was also armed with either Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment SPF 15 or Fresh Advanced Therapy Lip Treatment zipped into their ski jackets for c ..read more

Dreams of Hugh Jackman & Michael Douglas

Monday night it was almost 70 degrees in NYC and what was supposed to be a lovely, warm fall party, instead felt like a Midsummer Night’s Dream. I went to Marty Zweig’s stunning apartment overlooking Central Park to celebrate the Motion Picture and Television Fund. It was one of the loveliest cocktail parties I had been to in a long time. The host graciously showed us his unbelievable museum quality art collection of Renoirs, Degas, and more. Hugh Jackman, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones mingled with the 20 or so other guests as if we were all just hanging out. Marla Malcolm Beck w ..read more
