Hi everyone, applying to MPP programs in the next cycle (HKS, Princeton, SIPA, Oxford, Syracuse, etc) and keen to hear how consulting backgrounds (MBB, tier 2 strategy) are perceived by admissions when you otherwise lack any policy/govt experience? Will be just past the two year mark in firm at time of application, but tossing up whether to keep working in consulting to save funds for program (planning to go into govt after with specific policy area in mind, not getting sponsored by consultancy) or to pursue a government policy role in the 6-12 months beforehand to: a) Increase chance of admi ..read more

Public Policy = intimidating

Hi! I'm a public policy freshman and I was just wondering what introverted students/employees in the public policy field have to say about overcoming the expectations and struggles that they may have faced. I wanna connect with my peers since it's such a small discipline in my school but I'm intimidated by the fact that I'm probably not as assertive in my ideas as them. Am I hopeless about landing an internship or job? submitted by /u/Winstonchung [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

I'm an international with a background in Economics currently working in government. I'm exploring the idea pursuing a PhD in Public Policy in the US. Given my background and experience, I'm considering whether obtaining a Master of Public Administration (MPA) or a Master of Public Policy (MPP) would be a viable pathway towards achieving this goal. However, I'm seeking advice from those familiar with the field to help guide my decision. Specifically, Are there any MPA/MPP programs known for effectively preparing for PhD in public policy later? What career opportunities and trajectories could ..read more

Hello everyone! I'm a second-year computer science student and will be graduating in 1.5 years. I've had experience in community organizing/hosting events discussing social issues. I've had research experience that's dealt with detecting hate speech using machine learning models. I'm only giving this information because I'm wondering what other steps I need to take in order to get into tech policy? Where should I look for internships? What kind of personal projects can I do? Should I pursue my Ph.D. and if so what should I focus on? Should I also do any other type of schooling (minors, etc ..read more

I have an LLB from UK Top 5 Uni. Have worked in policy in in a major IO (UNICEF) and global tech company over past 5 years. I am keen to go into graduate studies and idea is to work in a big tech policy role or an international organisation. I can either do an LLM at Columbia and curate my courses to a policy focus, tech law etc with some courses from SIPA as well (about 2 courses) or go for an LSE MPP which will develop quant skills and have less optional modules but give me a good overall grounding in policy skills. I would be an Interntaional student in both places,(I am from a devloping c ..read more
