Rockler Box Joint Cauls

No matter how carefully I cut and fit my box joints, if they aren’t clamped thoroughly at glue-up, there’s no guarantee all the pins and slots will be pushed fully together. The key to effective clamping, however, is applying pressure against every pin. That’s where Rockler’s Box Joint Cauls are the ideal solution. Their inner surfaces are laid out with alternating pin-and-slot patterns to match whatever common joint I’m making — 1/4″, 3/8″, 1/2″ or 3/4″. Thin slots on their rounded outer corners enable pennies to be inserted to keep strap clamps from falling down when they’re tightened. These ..read more

The Greenville Woodworkers Guild is bigger than many, both in membership and in physical space. Roughly 950 people are part of the South Carolina organization, which owns a building with over 20,000 square ft of space that houses both a shop and a lecture hall that regularly hosts woodworkers from across the country. In 2016, the Guild celebrated its 35th anniversary with founding members Art Welling and Bob Harvey, Bobby Hartness, founder Michael McDunn and longtime member Bob Ripley. What’s the secret to the Guild’s success? Current president Charlie LeGrand says, “The mission is what has se ..read more

Festool TSV 60 KEB-F-Plus Plunge-cut Saw

Industrial-grade panel saws often have a smaller blade, situated in front of the main blade, to pre-score the surface of what’s being cut before the primary blade cuts completely through it. It’s a highly effective means of eliminating splintering on the face of the panel where the primary blade teeth emerge. This sort of technology is never off ered on conventional table saws for home shops, much less portable track saws! That is, until now, with Festool’s revolutionary new TSV 60 KEB-F-Plus Plunge-cut Saw with Scoring Function. While other Festool and competitor track saws rely on splinter g ..read more

Before the advent of petroleum-based paints, casein (milk protein)- based paints were commonplace. In recent years, these historically inspired paints have had a resurgence in popularity among DIYers, crafters and woodworkers alike. Part of that revival has to do with the nontoxic nature of this powdered paint. It is VOC-free, making it a safe and eco-friendly option for indoor or outdoor use. Other benefits include milk paint’s versatility and visual appeal. It can be applied over absorbent surfaces such as wood, concrete, plaster or brick without the need for primer. It is UV fade-resistant ..read more

Most wood finishes are food-safe, once their solvents have flashed completely off and the finish fully cures. Even so, there are project applications where your conscience wants all risk of toxicity to be a non-issue, right? Think hand-carved spoons, wooden bowls or serving pieces and children’s toys. Clapham’s Beeswax Salad Bowl Finish can alleviate any niggling concerns you may have, because its ingredients couldn’t be simpler: beeswax and food-safe mineral oil. That’s it! It contains no harmful chemicals or additives. Unscrewing the lid and taking a deep breath of the contents will confirm ..read more

Getting a Grip on Layout

Few things frustrate my woodworking enthusiasm more than when the side effects of aging get in the way, and here’s one of them. As someone who has worked with my hands for 40 years, arthritis regularly inhibits my grip, making it harder to manipulate small parts. Which is why I find these new aluminum Saddle Squares from Rockler to be so handy. Notice that they have a knurled grip — I’ve found it to not only make the task of positioning them easier, but it also enables me to hold them more confidently. That is a win-win in my book! Rockler offers four options: 90 degree, 45-degree miter, 1:6 d ..read more
