Hello all!! I am a junior in high school, and I applied to 2 monthlong summer orchestral camps. They began sending out acceptance letters a couple of weeks ago, and I had not received a letter yet. I took that as a bad sign, ahaha. Today, I received a rejection from one of the camps (the less competitive one too!). I am disappointed, but not shocked. I honestly, did not turn in an audition that I am proud of. I began preparing my audition pieces in December, for auditions that were due in February. My main piece sounded sloppy. Now that I have a better command over all of the technique in the ..read more

hi everyone! im just finishing up my first year of music school and honestly ive had an extremely rough go. from a prof who told me in my first lesson to give up on my dreams of becoming an orchestral musician and told me i would likely never make it as a performer to developing a massive inferiority complex because i feel that despite my hard work, im not improving and all my friends are better than me, ive come to slightly hate playing flute. every time i go to play i just start thinking of all these negative things and i just start crying. im pretty sure im burnt out (who wouldve guessed ..read more

Any tips for this wooden flute?

I am not sure how I should position the reed or blow on it. I got this flute second hand so I have no instructions and I’m a bit confused by the cap and reed since all the wooden flute tutorials I’m finding online don’t seem to have a reed. Any tips much appreciated! submitted by /u/frmentor [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Basically i’m sick right now and i have a sore throat. I’m wondering if i should still practice/if y’all practice when you’re sick? I usually practice maybe 2 hours a day and It feels wrong not practicing, i’m not sure what to do. Also how long without practicing do you feel like you get technique loss? submitted by /u/BoysenberrySwimming1 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Starting flute with experience on different kind of flute

I’ve been playing a marching flute for 2.5 years but the kind of music I play is rubbish and the flute I have is rubbish . However I have become very familiar with playing decently fast , whilst marching in shit weather , over very loud drums , which isn’t easy. Despite this I really enjoy the instrument and it’s a breath of fresh air from playing piano , and I can be fairly certain to seriously commit to playing the concert flute as I do enjoy the sound and repertoire of the instrument. I don’t know everything about the differences and am obviously far from incredible at the marching flute b ..read more

Young adult flute ensembles in London?

I’m 20 and started learning flute a couple of months ago. It’s going to take a while to get to this point, but I would really like to eventually play with others and make friends that are around my age. Are there any young adult amateur ensembles I could join in London? I’m graduating from uni in a couple months so societies won’t be an option. I always wish I got to experience making music in a group when I was still in school, now I feel like it’s too late! submitted by /u/Altruistic_Sea_9704 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Should I go handmade?

Hello! I am currently studying flute at uni and I was considering upgrading. I currently play on a YFL 362 and wanted to get a Haynes Q2. However, a friend of mine said if I am already playing on an intermediate flute, why should I buy another intermediate instead of going for a handmade. The problem with handmade for me is mainly the cost and how it will be in USD instead of CAD. Any thoughts? submitted by /u/No-Appeal8592 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
