How Cork’s Spike Island went from Ireland’s Hell to Europe’s Leading Tourist Attraction

Of all the profound changes Cork’s Spike Island has undergone during its recorded 1,300-year history, perhaps the most significant is that all those who go there now do so willingly. For a time, it was the largest prison on earth – housing 2,300 inmates – and a venue for the most squalid, inhumane internment imaginable. Enveloped by the sprawling Cork Harbour, off the coast of Cobh, Spike has served as a jail on four occasions (as recently as 2004) across the centuries, punctuated by periods as a naval and military redoubt. Indeed, Spike’s is a storied – often horrifying – past but, over the l ..read more

As self-catering family holidays go, Cork’s Castlemartyr is among the very best

I had the great pleasure of staying in Castlemartyr for one-week of self-catering. The party comprised me, my wife, our three-year-old son, Darragh, and our Golden Cocker Spaniel, Dexter. We had options when considering where to holiday. We could fly somewhere and enjoy some sun but honestly, the trials and tribulations of managing an active and strong-willed little guy through a flight were not appealing. We have done this before and it is hard work, usually ending up with him running out of energy and finally falling asleep as we land. There were plenty of other self-catering establishments ..read more

“An authentic slice of Ireland.” As sound-bites go, the people behind the Munster Vales could hardly have asked for anything better than the one provided by travel writer and broadcaster Fionn Davenport. Speaking to RTÉ Radio 1, Davenport fondly recalled his brief trek across Ireland’s newest tourism region. Encompassing Tipperary, Waterford, Limerick and Cork, the Munster Vales were only officially unveiled last October and, when striving for a foothold in a sphere as competitive as the Irish tourism market, ringing endorsements from high-profile industry figures are priceless. Ireland is always talked about being the large, green, lush country that is full of tales and exciting places to drink. I cannot disagree with these statements. When I chose to make the move, I considered everything that I needed to do to be prepared and I also made sure that this is where I wanted to spend the rest of my days. I was glad I did and the move was something that I couldn’t have agreed with more. With so much to do, so much land to explore and ever-changing scenery, it was a place I could call home. Why I Chose to Move to Ireland There were many reasons that I chose Ireland over ..read more

Since its initiation in 2014, the Wild Atlantic Way has emerged as a bona fide cultural and tourism phenomenon. The 2,500km meandering exploration of Ireland’s west coast – between Donegal and Cork – encompasses numerous sites of natural wonder, such as the Cliffs of Moher and the Skellig Islands, that were well established as tourist destinations. So, as a concept, the Wild Atlantic Way was in receipt of ready-made traction, at home and abroad. However, by defining the route, in tandem with extensive and savvy promotion, Ireland’s various tourism bodies have been hugely successful in the shee ..read more

The 300m missing beach, Doonagh vanished in 1984 storm and left behind rock pools & a rocky strand as seen in this drone video. The entire volume of sand at The Doonagh beach on Achill Ireland in the West of Ireland had mysteriously disappeared due to a freak tide. The wind coming in from the north has been very strong recently and it must have transported eroded material in from elsewhere – explained Sean Molloy of Achill Tourism. A beach that was washed away by storms more than 30 years ago has reappeared off the west coast of Ireland. https://t.co/VNTxFKztrs pic.twitter.com/3p2m8ISC ..read more
