Of slow living, seasons, and flowers

Since our move to France, I’ve been revisiting my core values and desires, through journalling, and sometimes just by listening to my heart, to how I feel. One of the reasons we chose this area is because we want to live life at a slower pace, and spend more time in nature. Sustainability is also becoming more and more important for us, and living a holistic life in harmony with nature. My husband and I follow a plant based diet, for the animals but also for the planet. We want to tread even more lightly on this beautiful Earth. We try to shop local, reduce our consumption, and avoid plastic ..read more

An update & Creativity First Aid Kit

Last year my husband and I moved to France, and we now live in a small hamlet in beautiful Limousin, surrounded by fields and trees. We love the area, and I’m very grateful for the house we found – light filled rooms, white walls, wooden floors (goodbye carpet at last!), and a small garden. All types of change are stressful though, even those we choose. As a Highly Sensitive Person, I need extra time to integrate all the new sights, scents, sounds, and experiences, no matter how beautiful they are, and also time to grieve for all the people, places, and familiar habits left behind. So once ..read more

New series & new beginnings
Cristina Colli

For the first two months of the year I was snowed in with work and didn’t have much time to play with flowers, nor blog. I did however create a self-portrait, the first of a series inspired by the seasons and the Wheel of the Year. The Celts celebrated the beginning of spring on the first day of February, at Imbolc, and since the seasons and seasonal cycles are a great source of inspiration for my work, it made sense to start this new series, and new creative path, with a celebration marking new beginnings. I had the idea for the series while meditating, which proves the point that to hear yo ..read more

Understanding exposure

When I bought my first DSLR camera, back in 2010, I was both thrilled, and overwhelmed. I unwrapped my brand new camera and lenses, admired it for a little while, and then put it back in the box. I was almost afraid of using it, partly because it was so precious and I didn’t want to damage it, and partly because I didn’t have a clue what all those buttons and dials would do. I felt intimidated, and didn’t know where to start. For a few days I left it in the box, then one day I took it out and and started using it, in automatic mode, but I wasn’t happy with how my photos turned out. I had a v ..read more

December floral notes
Cristina Colli

December is a palette of white, muted greys, blues, greens, and purples, with a few touches of colour: pink to remind me of pale dawns and hazy beech woods, and red for holly berries. The days are short and mostly grey. Occasionally the sun makes an appearance, hanging low in the sky, casting long shadows. There’s no snow, but at times milky skies and mist, like a veil, shroud the world and turn it into a dreamy, evanescent fairy land. The beauty of Winter, understated, mysterious, and full of possibility. I feel the desire to hibernate, sit by the fire with a book, wrap myself in a blanket ..read more

A Christmas gift guide
Cristina Colli

As a child I loved everything about Christmas: the tree and decorations, the sweets and cakes, and of course the presents. Growing up I stopped celebrating the religious aspect of this holiday, and instead I now celebrate the winter solstice and the seasons cycle. What I like most about the last two weeks of December is taking time off and relax with my husband. We don’t like travelling at this time of the year, so we have a quiet Christmas – it’s usually just us and the cats, some nice food, books, Netflix, and DVDs. I still decorate my home and make a tree, and actually leave my fairy light ..read more

November floral notes

Another month is coming to an end, wrapped in mist, rain, fallen leaves, a few beautiful sunsets, and the first frosts. I didn’t spend as much time in nature as I would have liked, partly because of the weather and partly because I’ve been busy creating images and working on my still life photography courses. When I have a bust of creative energy I tend to retreat into my own world, going from camera to notebook to computer, neglecting routines and just giving myself heart and soul to my projects…so I had to force myself to go for a walk at least at the weekend, to keep some kind of balan ..read more

How to find inspiration within
Cristina Colli
by Cristina Colli

There is nothing truly original, and every creation is based on existing concepts connected in a novel way. What’s truly unique is the individual viewpoint – there’s only one “you” in this world. Personality traits, surroundings, upbringing, travels, hobbies, and experiences all contribute to influence your perception of reality, and shape your unique perspective. The act of creating is an act of self-expression, so looking within and trusting your vision are essential to produce innovative work. As a recovering perfectionist, it took me some time, and a lot of journalling and introspection ..read more
