You wouldn't believe how often I Google “sunset times Seattle” and “10 day Weather forecast Seattle”. Searching for the best lighting conditions is an essential & time consuming part of my job as a family photographer. If you want to take better pictures of your kids, I suggest you get out there with your camera 30-60 minutes before sunset. The sunset time changes every night by a few minutes. As the year goes by it adds up to hours of difference. In the winter we're taking pictures at 3pm and in the summer we're out there at 7pm. Regardless of the season, the best time to take pictures o ..read more

The Power of Taking Family Photos at Home: Intimacy, Personality, Grit and Trust

INTIMACY — Why would you hire a person (a stranger at first) to come inside your home and take pictures of you playing with your kids? Sounds weird when I write it like that! Years ago, I had a photographer on my team who refused to do any photo shoots in private homes. She would only let me assign her shoots that were outside in public spaces. She was uncomfortable going into our clients’ houses both for her own safety and also because she found it awkward to walk into a stranger’s intimate space. From day one, I’ve been the opposite. I’m so excited to visit your house and see you guys living ..read more

MY FAVORITE PHOTO I mean that face, that little tongue, the shoes…. right? LOL WHAT I SEE (A PHOTOGRAPHY TIP) I’ve been photographing families for almost 10 years now and I’ve got my favorite shots. I try and get this shot for every family I work with. This is what I see… 1) Every member of the family present. 2) I can pretty much see everbody’s faces. I’d love if dad looked up a bit so I could see his eyes too. 3) Everybody is smiling towards the center. 4) The kid, the centerpiece is bright and shiny. 5) Something interesting is happening. Kid is making cute face! It’s engaging to look at, d ..read more

When you have fun with your family photo shoot, I have fun. Tolle is one of my most creative and passionate clients. At least four times a year we meet up to play dress up, go on a little family adventure and add to their collection of childhood portraits. You know I LOVE working with families on a regular basis (it means we actually get to be friends and the photos we take just keep getting better). What makes these guys extra special is that Tolle pre-plans her family’s shoots and draws inspiration from the British royal family for all their fashion and location choices. Before her shoot Tol ..read more

Kristi contacted me asking for a short family video to mark the growth of her two kids. They had a video made one year ago and wanted to have another one created because the kids had grown and changed so much over the year. This time they invited me over to play in their backyard and bike down the street. The kids are super active so we were quickly switching between baseball, parachute, climbing wall, sliding, and cooking a pretend breakfast in their outdoor play kitchen. Oh, and they were blowing bubbles (which is one of my absolute favorite things to photograph!). Every family I work with r ..read more

The thing that's most special about working with me is that my shooting style is very natural and includes video. It will probably feel like I'm not even taking photos at all. I'll almost never tell you to look or smile at the camera. The whole time we're just hanging out and talking, getting to know each other, letting the kids show me around and play games. We can go explore a cool location out in the world or we can stay cozy at your home and capture a taste of what your daily life is like. I want you to feel really comfortable to be yourselves and do whatever activities you actually enjoy ..read more

What the heck is a Hatchimal? Getting first hand exposure to the hottest kiddy trends is probably one of the top perks of being a family photographer. So this year, Penelope (one of my favorite little girls in Seattle) is obsessed with Hatchimals…little plastic creatures that you break free from plastic eggs. It’s a thing. I woke up on the morning of her birthday party and had no idea that Hatchimals even existed. By 3pm I was an expert. Penelope took me into her playroom and talked me through her entire collection. I treasure these quiet little moments together. The party was popping outside ..read more
