What are some tips to effectively reestablish rapport and confront any potential awkwardness after being tied to a situation where a client was involuntarily commited.

No small details because of HIPAA and PHI but I was in a situation where a client had an altered mental state and became verbally agressive with me for no logical reason (and it's very much unlike them and I have never seen them like that before). I would like to continue to move on and continue working with them if they choose to after they're stabilized and ready to return to the community. I'm normally good with establishing and maintaining rapport and consider this a strong suit, but I've never come across this situation and would appreciate tips or input. submitted by /u/Wrong_Tomorrow_ ..read more

I found out about this great series. It's incredibly interesting and deals with both macro and micro issues related to psychosis and the state of the mental health system in North America. submitted by /u/Outside_Feeling_5818 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Hospital Social Work

I’m a hospital social worker in maternal child health. I’ve been having a hard time recently when it comes to working alongside DSS workers for substance exposed newborn cases we are mandated to report in the hospital. The more I work with them the more I see how flawed the system is especially for mothers who have a substance abuse history. Birth parents are often not treated with any respect. I sent a follow up email about a case and DSS supervisor offered to have a meeting. I thought it would be collaborative meeting where we could all share concerns. Instead the DSS supervisor barely let ..read more

Does anyone here provide supervision for a fee? How do you go about doing that? I kinda feel guilty charging since I got all my supervision for free through my jobs, but also need to find ways to bring in more income! submitted by /u/Bubbly_Chocolate4324 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

I stunned for 20 seconds, excused myself, went back to the office to laugh. Yeah. What's yours? submitted by /u/These-Parking-3446 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

What are some mistakes you’ve made which you felt bad about?

Typically, I’m exceptional at staying on top of everything. However, for that reason I have the highest case load and I’m the only one who didn’t lose access to the website we need to utilize in order to input financial requests. Anyway, in shelter and even when dealing with funders. Things get chaotic and there’s never an established protocol. Maybe it’s bc I’m in the south and the south is slow. don’t place the whole blame on myself over a mistake because my supervisor who needed me to submit things on her end should have also been on top of this as well. I have my own case load and enough ..read more

CEU Search-PESI

Having quite a time finding CEU's info on the PESI site. Have been in contact via email trying to sort it all out....seems so disjointed. They offer free CEU's for Veterans, but allocate 'spaces' for them, and you have to contact someone with your training choices to see if there are free 'spaces' for each one! Anyone else find the PESI site hard to use? Also cannot find trainings that fulfill mandatory CEU's (Ethics, Cult Comp, Opioids); they don't seem to be listed anywhere, and the Search bar comes up with 'Zero'. submitted by /u/Maraudermick1 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Am I bad at this?

For the simple fact that I am exhausted, I'll keep this short - I had a very upset client this morning who was yelling, waving, stomping, etc. Largely the result of an unfortunate dynamic at my residential workplace where we balance therapy with case management (it is hard to gain and keep trust & rapport when I am the one who has to enforce agency rules and deal with compliance issues, etc). Either way, what he said was hurtful but not uncommon. I responded the way I normally do - I stayed calm, cool, and collected in the moment, and when he left, TEARS. It feels like I can't even contro ..read more

Tough week - what are your little (or big) wins?

I’ve had a tough week. I’m a forensic social worker and an attorney went totally into me for no reason over email and tore apart a report I wrote. I have great relationships with all the attorneys in the office so this was so left field. My little win here is the attorney apologized to me today and said he was aggressive for no reason. I’ve had an exhausting time trying to find a rehab for a client who could be discharged into it directly from Rikers. I’ve spent literally hours calling around. The client has a seizure disorder and everyone passes him on saying he’s too high risk. Total system ..read more
