The phantom of the north in flight. It's been a year since I've photographed a Great Gray. That's a long time to go without spending time with my favorite bird. So you can imagine just how excited I was seeing this gorgeous guy yesterday in Yellowstone! I photographed him, as well as his Owlet who was close by, for several hours. This is one of my favorite shots from the encounter, as I’ve always dreamt of a flight shot like this! A day like this was definitely worth the year long wait ..read more

Spring time in the Tetons is my favorite. Here’s a photo from one of the most amazing sunsets I’ve ever witnessed. As I sat there down by the lake watching this incredible scene with the melting ice and beautiful Grand Teton Mountains, the sound of Sandhill Cranes and Canada Geese filled the icy air and I just had to stop and say “wow.” See more @isaacspicz on Instagram ..read more

Spring Grizzlies

The grizzlies are back out and we’re reminded of the special presence they bring to the landscape. I’ve always loved this quote: “In part because bears can be so dangerous, they force you to pay attention. The awe of being in their presence strips away the chaos of thoughts and distractions that normally dominate your consciousness. They focus your attention on the moment. They flood your blood with adrenaline and endorphins…. They introduce you to terror, awe, amazement and ecstasy. They connect you to the deepest pulses of life. This is their gift. The power to take your life, or to renew i ..read more

Bears are waking up!

It’s always so exciting to see the first grizzly bear each year...5 months is a long time to go without bears. This male looks huge after hibernating, so I can only imagine what he looked like going into the den. In hibernation bears rely entirely on fat reserves, and in 5 or 6 months of laying around, they lose virtually no muscle mass. The male bears, as pictured here, are first to show in the spring. We will start seeing females and cubs in the next month or two ..read more

Finally it’s Spring
Revealed In Nature | Yellowstone & Grand Teton Photography

It’s spring, finally. The snow is rapidly loosening its grip on the valley. Pocket gophers and voles are still hunkered down beneath the small white patches that remain, and this experienced red fox is taking advantage of the cover that provides for hunting. For several days this fox hunted on this thin layer of snow and buried her prey in the ground nearby. Now, she has more food than she can carry in one trip. With a moth full of voles, she heads off, presumably to a den where young kits are hiding ..read more

Winter Photography In Yellowstone - Coyote

Coyotes are perhaps one the most underestimated members of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. This highly intelligent and adaptable specifies deserves a spotlight. Their success making a living on a harsh landscape is due to a remarkable resourcefulness. I recently watched a coyote over several hours fishing for trout in a river, ambushing waterfowl on the river bank, pouncing in the snow for small rodents, and stealing bites of bison from a recent wolf kill that the pack had left temporarily unattended. The variety of creative ways coyotes utilize to find food is impressive. For the majority ..read more

A gorgeous Red Fox in the snow. I've had a blast the last couple days photographing several foxes in gorgeous snowy conditions. Absolutely love the way this shot turned out, as she seemed to pose for us on top of a snow bank. I was very happy when she decided to lay down in this awesome spot with a nice dark background! She was quite the model. See more @Isaacspiz ..read more

Winter Photography in Yellowstone - Ermine

At first glance these slender weasels appear at a serious disadvantage when it comes to keeping warm in the winter. They have practically no body fat, and relatively little fur in their winter coats, but an ermine has several unique features and strategies to make up for it. For one, their coat turns from brown to white each winter, allowing them to be nearly invisible as they move through a snow white landscape. Their tail has a black tip on the end, which functions as a decoy luring any potential predators to strike there, rather than a more vulnerable part of the body. To make up for a lac ..read more

Winter Photography In Yellowstone - Otters
Revealed In Nature | Yellowstone & Grand Teton Photography

There is little question that the next species in my series of winter wildlife finds the most creative ways to have fun. Humans aren’t the only ones enthralled with the feeling of sliding on snow. While we use skis, boards, or sleds, river otters need look no further than their long and slender bodies. When on land, otters cover ground with a hop, hop, slide, hop, hop, slide movement pattern. Sliding on the snow and ice certainly allows them to travel more efficiently, but spend any time with otters and there’s no denying the routine is as much, if not more, for fun as it is for practicality ..read more
