A Bad Haircut
An American Lesbian in London

Look, this wasn't like me. I don't have reactions this visceral over a bad hair cut, but there I was - upset beyond belief. I'm trying to figure out why I was so mad. I mean, it's just hair. It'll grow back. Right? So, let me set the scene. It's lockdown, mid April, and we've been buttoned up tight in our little house since... I can't even remember....December-something 2020. It's the unprecedented "second" lockdown, that followed the first big one we had here in the U.K.  That was a doozer.  That was something like March 2020 all through summer, into Autumn, with a limited lif ..read more

It's here. The post-Olympic Withdrawals. We forgot about this part.

Look, there is no nice way of putting this but we're going to miss The Olympics.  For as messed up as they were, it was something that brought us together for a nano-second when things feel so divided regardless of where you live. It was weird, there's no doubt about that. No crowds yelling and cheering. Empty gymnasiums, stadiums, rings and at the indoor cycling tracks. It made me so hyper aware of the quiet. When there was crowd noise, it felt as piped in as it was and became almost a distraction. Hearing the latest reports of who had to drop about because of COVID positive tests ..read more

Be Supportive or Just Be Quiet, It's Not That Hard.

I'm not quite sure what sparked this blogger rant, but I'm certain that Bret Easton-Ellis had something to do with it. If you're not sure who that is, he's a gay writer who had 15 minutes of fame back in the 80's for his books that were turned into mediocre big screen films, like "Less Than Zero" and "Bright Lights, Big City" and then went on to do nothing notable, except snort coke and trash everything that everyone else ever did (or does), via Twitter. It downright irks me when someone has to feed their insane and constant need for media attention by spouting off negativity to get back i ..read more

I Just Asked for Ketchup on My Eggs....
An American Lesbian in London

I just asked for ketchup on my eggs this past Saturday morning, and this happened: Meet Bruce, our newest addition. I don't even know how it all came about. It was a typical slow starting Saturday morning. Me, the wife and housemate were all eating McDonald's breakfast wraps. I asked for ketchup, which, I'll admit, I never do. What can I say? I was feeling whimsical and edgy at the same time, so I went with it and had ketchup on my eggs -much to everyone's surprise. After the initial shock wore off, we were discussing "the house" plans. Jem and I found a very perfect house, in very perfect ..read more

A Sea of Green - L Fest 2013

By now you've all heard Donna and myself on our internet radio show/podcast talking at length about "L Fest"- the amazing camping festival that goes on every July for the last 3 years, where almost 2,000 women gather in northern England for a weekend of comedy, arts, and music. We've discussed almost every band that would be playing on both stages, every event thats offered from day spas, to writing workshops, author readings, performances, lesbian movies at the cinemas, sports, activities, kid's zones, doggy daycare, the food vendors and the shopping stalls. We've gone on about the exceptiona ..read more

You Know it's a PMS Week When....
An American Lesbian in London

When every day "life moments" become grossly distorted, it's a PMS week for me. Only I don't notice it until I look back on them 5-7 days later. Maybe I should start a diary or a journal about them, but I have a feeling it would be a horribly embarrassing media circus if it ever got in the wrong hands. Ok, I digress. Let's look at the facts: All month long, I normally just sigh over things that happen and they roll off my back without another thought. Like, on a regular day, if my lighter falls out of my pocket every 5 minutes because of the crappy pockets on my Slazenger hoodie, it's no ..read more

A Guide to Surviving Lesbian Events
An American Lesbian in London
by

It's no secret that lesbians are passionate about their events: WomenFest in Key West, Girls At Gay Days in Orlando, The Dinah Shore Weekend in Palm Springs, L-Fest in England, a Sweet Travel resort stay or cruise, Pride Festivals all over the map. Any excuse to pack a dufflebag, a mid-sized SUV or  a cooler. We plan our vacations by these annual events. When others at work are scrambling to get Christmas Eve off, we're marking huge red X's around March, September, June and July dates and offering to cover any shitty shifts to be sure we get the right days off. It's as natural as ow ..read more

I've been interviewed a lot in the past 7 years. Sometimes it's for a print article in a magazine, sometimes it's on a radio show, other times it's at a festival or an event. I also DO a lot of interviews. So, questions are a big part of my life. When I have to interview a celebrity or even someone mildly famous, whether it's for my own show, or for one of the magazines I write for, I ..read more

What Do You Want to be When You Grow Up?
An American Lesbian in London

"What Do You Want to Be When You Grow Up?" Do you remember getting asked that when you were young? I do. When I look back now,  I don't recall "lesbian" being on the list, but alas, it happened. I know I'm more than that and yes, it's a part of who I am, but not really what I do. Or...is it? Actually, I'm not really sure where it falls, but I thought I'd explore it a bit more. I can incorporate being a lesbian into just about any aspect of my life, really. But that little talent didn't happen until I figured things out. Figuring things out didn't happen in any sort of record time.   ..read more
