Tell Us About Yourself:I was born and raised in Mexico City. I have a master’s in Spatial Planning  [meaning absolute space], and I am a map enthusiast and a criminal analysis enthusiast, what better way to represent criminal behavior than using maps! I worked as a crime analyst for years in Mexico and I am kind of changing careers now but always trying to bring something to the table related to map representations. I have always loved maps and I think using them to represent certain phenomena will put a different view on complex topics such as crime and delinquency, a needed view. Aside ..read more

Tell us about yourself I fell in love with maps as an undergrad, I was studying so much I barely left my room and maps were my window to the outside. I spent so much time browsing topographic maps that at one point I forgot water wasn’t sky blue ! Since getting my degree I have mostly worked in local and national government as a GIS analyst and cartographer. A few months ago, I joined the French National Institute of Geographic and Forest Information. Tell us the story behind your map Years ago, in a geography or history class, I learned about an administrative curiosity in France : muni ..read more

In honor of the 10th anniversary of geohipster, we’re looking back at past interviews. Six years ago Alex Leith interviewed Adam Steer. Adam covered Sea Ice, Point Clouds, Africa, and Skiing. When asked the most important question of “Shapefile or Geopackage he threw in with Geopackage with the best answer ever: “GeoPackage! Although to be honest, I’d be hard pressed to have a proper discussion about why.” I think I had first contacted Adam back in the fall and it’s taken a while to get this wrapped up. Why? It’s quite a story…a good story…..and it’s one that resonates with me. So where is Ad ..read more

This month’s map comes from Amanda Robinson Tell Us About Yourself I’m from Canada but I’ve lived and worked in London, England for 16 years. My main job is Associate Director at a consultancy that primarily works with local/municipal level government on things such as economic strategies and development. Mapping comes into the job because often for projects we produce graphs and maps using social, economic, and demographic data for the towns and cities we work in. The point is to understand how social/economic/demographic factors manifest spatially and what that means for local economies, de ..read more

Tell Us About Yourself I graduated in 1996 from the Cartography: Digital Mapping program at the College (now Centre) of Geographic Sciences in Lawrencetown, Nova Scotia, Canada. At the time it was one of the few programs dedicated to cartography in North America, and to my good fortune I grew up nearby — I found out that I could make maps for a living by talking to COGS students at a career fair in my final year of high school. After graduating I moved to Calgary to work as an independent consultant creating maps for biologists, ecologists, and geologists. Since relocating to South America i ..read more

Geohipster Calendar Part 2

As I told someone this morning – this was the most geohipstery thing that could happen to a calendar. You print out a calendar, It’s wrong, can’t get much out of the printer’s support, and you offer a hack involving stickers. With the backlog of calendars – I have some hope. I contacted the printer and asked them to move ( on 20231208) all the backlogs to the new calendar. They are reporting a 20+ day backlog so that may fix a majority of them. I have no clue if that’s happened as of right now. I’m getting some requests for reprints. I’m getting some reports of success with the stickers, and I ..read more

So a lot of you are getting your new calendars and if you’ve looked – you’re going to notice a small problem. The year is wrong. I didn’t know about this until about 72 hours ago. The current revision (made Friday 20231208) of the calendar is correct. I’m not sure how many have gone out “wrong”. I’m not 100% clear on how this happend. I’ve got a ticket in with the printing company and hopefully I’ll have a resolution on it shortly. Geohipster doesn’t print these with profit in mind BUT we’ve always been proud of the calendar. I’m working on a plan. Barry Rowlingson (before I woke up on Friday ..read more

Technically – we did publish this after GIS Day…but slightly after PostGIS Day. This is never easy. We received 21 Submissions from 21 very talented people. We accepted 14 (12 months plus front and back) and it was tough. I **think** the calendar has went up in price just a little as has everything. Link to Store! Price: $17.06 (US) (yeah I know how did I manage to get .06 cents in there) As 2024 moves along we will be publishing each map. I’m actually debating showcasing the entries that didn’t make it as they were great maps. Thank you for your support. Documenting this ever changing landsc ..read more
