Again via the GA Newsletter. I've been involved in the creation of the Oak National Primary Geography resources for KS1 and 2. These are emerging over on the Oak site. It's now been announced that the GA is the curriculum partner for the KS3 resources, which will be available by September 2025. It's been an interesting project to be involved in so far. GA Chief Executive, Steve Brace, said: “The GA is delighted to have been selected to provide the KS3 Geography programme for Oak Academy. As Ofsted identified in their 2023 ‘Getting Our Bearings’ inspection report, there is the need for additi ..read more

Via the GA Newsletter - be sure to sign up if you haven't already. For those who don't know, the ABS is the suggested replacement for 'A' levels and T levels.  Given the fact it is proposed by the Conservative party, it has limited chance of happening unless the nation forgets the last 14 years on polling day. It is also unnecessary. Download the letter on this link ..read more

Flooding
Living Geography

We've had a certain amount of flooding over the last few months in many parts of the country.  The Fenland area where I work had 350% of its usual rainfall in February, and the Welney Wash road, which a colleagues uses for her commute to avoid a long detour has been shut for well over 80 days so far this winter, and been damaged by its regular inundations which has meant further road closure. I was reminded of this post from November last year, which includes a useful poem to consider when thinking about flood impacts. Time to repost @samillingworth’s amazing poem on #flooding. It convey ..read more

UHNWI

A new acronym for you to explore, if you haven't already in units on inequality. UHNWI We are talking here about Ultra High Net Worth Individuals: people who have a disproportionate amount of wealth and have a lifestyle which involves super yachts or private jets and a high impact on the planet. They have a massive impact through the lifestyle they have, and also through the impact they have on others. A lot of wealth is generally gained from creating environmental impacts of a negative kind. Some would argue they are philanthropists, some might talk about trickle down, but when so much wealth ..read more

15-minute conspiracy theories
Living Geography
by Alan Parkinson

This Guardian piece outlines how changes in transport policy were probably influenced by unfounded, and patently ridiculous theories. This relates to the plans to develop strategies which might enable 15-minute city neighbourhoods where unecessary car journeys were reduced, and cycling and other forms of transport which are environmentally preferable to cars were prioritised. These are important to reduce the impact of lifestyles on the air quality of cities, although the proliferation of rental e-bikes and scooters have cluttered up many city centres where they can be left as and where people ..read more

A textbook answer

From time to time, discussions over the value of textbooks come back. Many teachers have moved away from textbooks over the last decade or so, except perhaps for exam groups.  Fortunately I still get a few royalties each year from ones that I have written, and am also asked to write others which is nice. Many schools have moved towards online learning platforms such as OneDrive to host materials and resources, and track student work and be perhaps more flexible.  This despite some excellent KS3 textbooks that have been published recently: notably the Geographical Association's own b ..read more

Natural History GCSE and Climate Literacy
Living Geography

A cross-posting from my GCSE Natural History blog. A new post on the OCR website from Professor Sylvia Knight. She talks about the connections between the proposed specification and climate literacy. "Whilst the Natural History GCSE is not and should not be a ‘climate change GCSE’ (in my opinion, the Statistics GCSE is actually best placed to be delivered entirely within a context of climate change), the inherent and intrinsic links between climate change and the natural world, in terms of impacts, adaptation and mitigation, are too numerous for climate change not to be near the core of the ne ..read more
