How to Love

In January 2021, I launched the next chapter of my life and work: How to Love—a podcast about relationships, sex, and parenting, hosted by yours truly and my husband, Joshua Fields Millburn. And for eight months, I didn’t write a blog post about it. I was scared. I was having long unfiltered conversations about topics most people avoid with my husband and publishing them for the world to listen to… I’ve got to be crazy to do that! A small part of my subconscious thought that if I wrote a blog post about the podcast it was more “out in the world” and that was intimidating. But with time I’ve ..read more

Gingerbread Cashew Butter Kiss Cookies

A few weeks ago my friend Bridget texted me asking if I’d be willing to develop a cookie recipe using her Gingerbread Cashew Butter and it felt like the perfect excuse to do some baking. It’s been a year and a half since I last posted a recipe. I’ll write a blog post or two about why I’ve been on a recipe (and writing) hiatus for much of the past 2 years. But for now, let’s dive into the cookie! This recipe is a reimagined hybrid of my two favorite childhood holiday cookies: gingersnaps and peanut butter blossoms. It wasn’t until I started thinking about what to do with the cashew butter that ..read more

A Minimalist Home For Highly Sensitive People

It was late at night when I pulled into our frost-coated driveway in Montana and turned off the car, I swung my travel bag over my shoulder and walked into the house. After setting my bag down on the kitchen table, I sleepily wandered to the thermostat and turned it up a few degrees. As I trudged up the stairs to bed I had a flash-back to the day I departed our Montana home for California and I remembered what would greet me upstairs. My parents had been visiting Ella and I for the weekend and wanting to get every last moment together, I’d left the house in disarray. Clean sheets were piled o ..read more

Minimal Clothing

This fall I refreshed my wardrobe. I replaced my 14 year old ski jacket that was no longer waterproof and I got a knee-length and very warm jacket to make winter in Montana more bearable. I replaced a couple of pitted-out white shirts, a ratty old sweatshirt, and got my first pair of flannel-lined jeans (they’re heaven). But after those very nice upgrades, I kept looking at clothing. I opened email proclaiming it was sale time. I clicked on social media ads for everything from workout wear to jewelry. It felt like I’d been infected by the shopping bug. Perhaps it was the timing, leading into ..read more

Turning Down The Noise of Hyperarousal

Hyperarousal. Never heard of it? Me neither. But hyperarousal is a helpful concept to understand if you struggle with being easily excitable or have frequent feelings of restlessness, anxiety, overwhelm, and an inability to focus. Although hyperarousal manifests differently for everyone affected, the hallmarks of this state include physical tension, inability to relax, continual brain chatter, anxiety, agitation, startling easily, difficulty concentrating, trouble sleeping, GI disturbances (IBS, constipation, or diarrhea), and feeling like you’re idling high. While hyperarousal is often ..read more

Motherhood

Mother’s day is a perfect time to reflect on motherhood — appreciating having a world-class mom as a role model, enjoying the friendship of other inspiring mothers, and processing my personal experience raising a precocious little girl. My path into motherhood was planned and fairly typical (meet person, marry person, have baby), but life over the six years since she was born has been extra-ordinary. My mother is as close to a perfect mom as I can imagine — loving, intelligent, capable. Both of my parents are incredible, but my mom was the glue that held our crazy 6-person hous ..read more

Banana Protein Muffins and Bread
Minimal Wellness

When I was a kid, a neighbor and close friend shared a sour cream banana bread recipe with my mom. It was chewy, hearty, sweet, and just a little tangy, and if allowed I would’ve eaten the entire loaf every time it came out of the oven. The sour cream banana bread is one of the recipes I make to remind me of my childhood home, but it needed a 21st century update. This new version of the banana bread is gluten-free, higher in protein, higher in fat, and lower in sugar than the original, but it’s just as delicious. Actually, I think it’s better. Over the course of this winter, I’ve tweaked vers ..read more

Golden Recovery Milk

Sip this velvety, warming, and delicious concoction any time you need a little calming and nourishing boost. The blend of anti-inflammatory ayurvedic spices found in this golden milk aids digestion, athletic recovery, and stress management, which makes it perfect for an everyday sipping ritual. This recipe calls for the addition of a protein powder, which is especially important for the muscle healing properties of this drink. I recommend using a plain or vanilla collagen powder or a vanilla plant-based protein. I’ve found the vanilla protein powders complement the other spices well while add ..read more

Nut and Browned Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies

These decadent, delicious, and beautiful cookies have a hidden secret — they’re grain-free and lower in sugar. But you’d never guess they’re better for you than the average cookie, the salty nutty caramel flavors offset by the bittersweet chocolate is craveable. Between the reduced sugar content and use of coconut flour instead of grain-based flour, these cookies are far lower in net carbohydrates than average. Given their lower net carb and higher fat content (thanks to the nut and regular butters and coconut), they’ll impact blood sugar less than a comparably sized standard cookie. They’re ..read more
