I'm working on a lovely piece of green soapstone.  It started out as a mass of elvers (young eels), but when I realised how small elvers are in real life - rather like live spaghetti, but actually even smaller - I changed my mind and these will now be transformed into young snakes! The carvings below are still at the 'elver' stage, but I've since been shaping the heads into something more snake-like ..read more

End of Crow 3 Project!

Almost finished - holes have been drilled in wooden base and underside of carving and a steel peg inserted.  The peg fits very snugly into the wooden base, but it's a bit loose in the crow head, so it needs a little araldite to secure it ..read more

Nearly done!

Last week the carving part was just about finished (forgot to take photos), but a little more polishing to be done this week before the crow head finally gets mounted on this nice bit of hardwood that's been hanging around the house for as long as I can remember. After a lot of sanding to smooth down irregularities and various stains it's accumulated over the years (after which I knocked it off the bench and had to sand it again!), it was ready for a rub with raw linseed oil.  It's just had a second rub and looking a nice rich colour. Oiled h ..read more

More polishing and texturising done today.  The fault line running through the beak can be seen from this side (see above pic).  I've been trying to smooth it down, but it's very resistant! Pic on the right is after further polishing and spraying with water to get an idea of what it will look like when highly polished and waxed ..read more

Soapstone Crow Head

This crow's head is carved from a pale green soapstone which has darker veins running through it.  When polished the effect can be really spectacular. The beak has a fault line running through it and I'm just hoping that polishing will smooth that and not shatter it completely! Early stages (Paul's photo ..read more

On with the magnolia pod and more..

The pod is nearing completion at last - I seem to have been working on this for ever!  Now there's just the polishing.  I say just, but it's very fiddly with lots of indentations and grooves that have to be polished with Wet & Dry paper, then a little T-Cut until it's finally ready for its waxing.  Quite a bit of work still to be done - all those white bits in the grooves have to be polished away. I've just started working on a head using a very small piece of Englis ..read more

The magnolia pod took a back seat while I was concentrating on the chameleon, but recently I've been working on it and it's beginning to take shape ..read more

Finished???

I've spend a few hours using wet & dry paper on my crow and my chameleon; rinsing them off, letting them dry and waxing. Then starting all over again because they weren't right yet... and again...and again.  Ended up with a coat of Liberon black patinating wax to enhance the dark feathers of the crow, but have since taken most of this off.  Still not sure what looks best as there are lots of fault lines on that side which don't look great, so may try just a little black wax again.  The chameleon alabaster also has fault lines running through it but on this they're not quite as noticeable ..read more

Polishing stage!

I'm at the polishing stage now, with a little bit of carving to refine some of the details as I go along.  In the photos the carving has just been washed so it looks quite shiny. When it's finished it will all be waxed, but I intend the Chameleon and the leaves to be  more highly polished and buffed than the branches and background, which will be a more matte. Side view showing leaf details Small carving of a ram's head, for a friend's April birthday (Aries - the Ram) from an alabaster offcut ..read more
