Land-based salmon farmer Salmon Evolution has reported its first operational profit, in what the company has called a “significant milestone”.
The Norway-based producer reported operating revenues of NOK 100.3m (£7.37m) in the first quarter of 2024 and a group EBITDA of NOK 24.1m (£1.77m), calculated on a back to farm basis and adjusting for transport costs.
In comparison, in Q1 last year Salmon Evolution recorded an EBITDA loss of NOK 22.4m (£1.65m).

Trout is becoming the fashionable new farmed fish favourite in some parts of the world, figures from the Norwegian Seafood Council show this week.
Trout exports for April totalled a healthy 4,177 tonnes, worth NOK 485 million (£35m). The figures for the corresponding month last year were 2,739 tonnes and NOK 322 million (£23.5m).
In value terms this represents an increase of around 51% in just 12 months, with the volume up by around 56%.

There were more problems for the Lerøy Seafood group today as the company found itself tackling a serious salmon escape.
It is feared that an estimated 14,000 fish have got out of a Lerøy Midt facility in the Hitra municipality.
The fish have an average weight of around seven kilos.
The company said it has rapidly managed to bring in extra resources to secure the site and recover as many escaped fish as possible.

Norwegian salmon exports were back on track in value terms last month, reversing the fall seen in March.
The value growth, however, was just 2% up on April last year, totalling NOK 9.9bn (£726m), an increase of NOK 222m (£16m).
The month-on-month rise last month followed the first drop in salmon prices for three years, recorded in March.
April’s salmon volume of 80,126 tonnes was down by 1% with Poland, Denmark and the United States the largest markets.

Bakkafrost today announced an increased 2024 first quarter operational profit or EBIT of 710m Danish kroner (£81.7m). The company said biological performance in Scotland is continuing to improve.
In fact the progress in Scotland meant that Bakkafrost was able to harvest superior quality large fish.
The group EBIT of DKK 710m compared with an EBIT of DKK 565m (£65m) in Q1 last year.
Revenue in the Faroe Islands increased by just over DKK 250m (£28.7m) to DKK 1,594m (£183m) and resulted in an operational EBIT of DKK 671m (£77m) against an EBIT of DKK 410m(£47m) in Q1 2023.

Newly formed Marine Cranes provides servicing, overhaul and sales to the marine industry across the UK and Ireland.
It has recently acquired an exclusive dealership with IRON FIST to supply the region and is developing its service centre in North Wales to allow for overhaul and service of larger cranes. Completion for this is scheduled for the end of May.

The European Commission has published guidance aimed at helping member states promote sustainable aquaculture.
The move, in the form of two working documents, comes in response to producer calls to reduce the administrative burden on establishing and operating sites within the union.
The Commission says the main objective of the guidance is to help unlock the great potential of fish farming.

AKVA Group, one of the world’s leading aquaculture technology and service businesses, today announced a 10% reduction in first quarter revenues, with slow progress in its land based sector.
The EBITDA was up, however, and the company is reporting a strong order book.
AKVA said there was acceptable activity level in sea based farming with improved profitability, but activity in land based operations was still slow. The group did not expect to sign any significant new contracts in this area during the first half of this year.

Dr Iain Berrill, Head of Technical at industry body Scottish Salmon, is one of three leading vets to be made an Honorary Associate of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in this year’s RCVS Awards.
