Our bone density starts to decline from the age of 30.  As estrogen falls in women during peri and post menopause, this causes a further decrease in bone density.  Without adequate load and challenge to our tissues and bones we then put ourselves at serious risk of injury and illness as we age.  Research suggests that in Australia, approx 50% of women over 60 years, will have at least one fracture due to low bone density and osteoporosis. Muscle mass also declines by 1% per year from the age of 30, and this decline accelerates after 40.  Without resistance training, our bod ..read more

In Pt 2 of this blog we will look at the effects of menopause on muscular and skeletal strength. As explained in the last post, in the years leading up to menopause known as peri menopause, our hormones are fluctuating and eventually oestrogen and progesterone production declines. Oestrogen, as well as regulating reproductive functions, also directs our metabolism and more specifically how we store fat and respond to exercise.  As oestrogen levels drop there is an increased tendency to store fat on our stomach as opposed to hips and thighs, similar to how men tend to store fat.  In a ..read more

Ahhh….….the joys of menopause!! In Pt 1 of this blog I am going to highlight the need for pelvic floor training, particularly pre and post menopause, and in Pt 2 we will look more closely at the strength implications of menopause.
