Quirky musical masterminds Tank and the Bangas are the soul-meets-jazz-meets-hip-hop New Orleans-based fivepiece that is delivering an entirely fresh sound to today’s sonic landscape. They brought the house down at Roots N Blues 2021 and are coming back this year to prime stage for the legendary Chaka Khan. The group’s resident flautist and keyboardist, Albert Allenback, tells us, “It was a blast playing Roots and Blues last year. The people, we felt, were there for the music with open ears and hearts. And they absolutely threw down, party-wise! The whole festival was exceptionally well-progr ..read more

Get to Know the Artist: Jaime Wyatt

At first glance, country singer-songwriter Jaime Wyatt might evoke a few assumptions. With long dark hair, heavy eye makeup, and a never-ending series of custom-made, androgynous-looking western suits, and a catalogue of songs with titles like “Sweet Mess” and “Rattlesnake Girl,” it’d be easy to guess she’s just a cowgirl wannabe. But even a single page of Wyatt’s tumultuous history will convince you her lyrics are anything but fiction and her style is a reflection of an identity that took her a long time to not only fully come to terms with herself, but feel ready to share with the world. The Dip, an eclectic seven-piece from Seattle, refuses to be boxed into any single category. Started in 2013 as students at the University of Washington in Seattle, the group’s original members still make up today’s lineup: Tom Eddy (lead vocals), Jarred Katz (drums), Mark Hunter (bass guitar), Jacob Lundgren (lead guitar), Brennan Carter (trumpet), Levi Gillis (tenor saxophone), and Evan Smith (baritone sax). At first, the band was less of a band than it was a just-for-fun side project between a group of friends with a shared passion for music. While this early love of the craft still persis ..read more

Photo: Holly Whitaker Though they hail from across the pond, up-and-comers The Heavy Heavy have quickly made a name for themselves in the world of Americana music. Their debut EP, Life and Life Only, was released less than two months ago, but it evidences the fact that the English duo, comprised of Georgie Fuller and Will Turner, have already mastered the ability to infuse the edge of British rock with the hazy nostalgia of mid-century California psychedelia.  Interviewer: Can you both talk about how you respectively got into music and then how you came together as the band? Turner: I’m p ..read more

We listen to our blues fans and last year they adored Larkin Poe, a duo comprised of Georgia-based sisters, Rebecca and Megan Lovell, who are keeping old-school southern blues alive. So this year, we’re bringing them back! The girls took the band’s name from their great-great-great-grandfather, Larkin Husky Poe, a cousin of none other than America’s favorite creep, Edgar Allan Poe. Rather than hiding from this fact, they fully embrace their ancestral darkness, describing themselves as “descendants of [the] tortured artist and creative genius.” As a band whose sound begs to be experienced live ..read more

The Kay Brothers, a Columbia-based family band, has found their place as an ever-evolving group of family members and friends who seek to keep traditional folk songs alive by way of what they call “stompgrass”—bluegrass with a kick.  Interviewer: Can you talk to me about how you guys got together? Kay: I sort of got into playing this kind of music with the Hat Trick and that band was started by Sean Canan and myself and that was kind of—I was a full-time musician—and that was kind of the daily provider at that point. Then Sean moved from here to St. Louis and performing together was kind ..read more

In the space of a year, jazz musician Jon Batiste has gone from being primarily known as the leader of the in-house band on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to a household name. However, Batiste’s 2022 Grammy sweep and ever-growing buzz didn’t come about by happenstance. Born to a large web of accomplished musicians and a fiercely hard worker since his teen years, Batiste’s seemingly newfound stardom has been a long time coming.  Batiste’s ancestors have been a staple of the New Orleans music scene for decades, with each generation of the family producing several notable musicians, inc ..read more

In the nearly three decades since their advent, Wilco has cultivated and retained a cult following and are widely regarded as one of the prime representatives of the genre they helped spearhead, alt-country, as well as one of the best alternative rock bands in recent history. Born out of Chicago, Wilco is a Midwestern band through-and-through, but they pull from the energy of early English punk and the storytelling of mid-century American folk, giving them a sound that transcends the borders of their home region. Ater twenty-eight years of steady releases, much of which have been met with cri ..read more
