We’re coming into the final week of shooting for Extreme lakeland and its been a roller coaster of a journey ( every journey though is described as a roller coaster , suppose it helps to build tension , ooh , what happened ? !!). But it has been great , battling against all odds and Covid lockdowns has meant the book has been delayed by 12 months and was nearly killed off due to the pandemic but luckily our loyal Publishers ( vertebrate Publishing ) stood by us and fought our case .           One of the cool things about the Lakes is that some of the earliest pioneer ..read more

Robbie Phillips Red Bulletin feature

Back in the summer I had the good pleasure of photographing my friend and all round hero/rock god Robbie Phillips . Its the first time I’ve been able to shoot an adventure piece literally 5 mins away from my front door so that was a nice change . Robbie had been spending his one hour a day’s exercise quota during lockdown hanging like a bat from the roof cracks under the bridges above the canal  in Edinburgh and when Red Bull caught wind of this they sent their intrepid reporter Matt along to interview Robbie and asked me to do the pics. photographic angles on this are limited , I can onl ..read more

I have finally managed to get back and finish of the Naked Mountain project started a few years ago , here’s the link to the previous shoot https://nadirkhan.co.uk/blog/naked-mountain/ I had seen Stephanie’s work and really liked the grace and calm that she brought to a shoot, and during lockdown we had chatted about the possibilities of her coming up to Scotland as soon as lockdown had lifted and getting some images around Scotland . The choice was Glencoe for day 1 and around Edinburgh for day 2 .   The first location also gave us maybe my favourite image of the shoot and it was my ..read more

2019 Roundup

I used to enjoy the yearly round up and the process of looking back over the year brought up surprises and moments that I had forgotten about with unexpected high points that had slipped my mind. This year feels quite different. It’s the first year that I made the full time move to Edinburgh and while I had been excited about the prospect of settling in a new city , what I hadn’t fully appreciated was how traumatic that would be emotionally and psychologically and the impact that would have on my whole life and my creative output.  I had always felt quite motivated and in many ways was a self ..read more

Milestones

I thought I’d start a series of blog posts around ‘Milestones’ , ie first front cover of a magazine, first publication, first major sales promotion image, first major commission , first major fashion shoot etc . These aren’t in chronological order , just the order they happened to come to mind in . I thought it may be interesting to photographers for me to dissect the image, ie  , gear choice, composition , editing etc and why I decided that this image was the image of choice from the shoot.   First up is this image of Naomi Buys on ‘ Wicked Gravity’ 8b at Malham Cove. Naomi had just completed ..read more

2018 Round up

These yearly round up posts are starting to come around a bit too quickly for comfort . Whats happened in 2018 then ? . Well , essentially I’ve been lazy and busy at the same time ; lazy in that I’ve posted very few blogs for reasons which I’ll explain but also busy as it’s the year I actually managed to bring to completion and print the ‘Extreme Scotland’ book project.   So why haven’t I posted blogs? Facebook now deliberately withhold  posts , or indeed anyones posts from a business page unless you pay to reach the people that follow you , so even though over 2000 people want to follow my p ..read more

The day everything good and pure within me died

Sarah and I decided to head to Skye for a few days after the madness and mayhem of Christmas , it’s such an emotionally charged time , tbh I’m not a fan. Its nice seeing family etc but I think the expectation that because it’s Christmas somehow someone sprinkles magic dust over everything and everyone and life for a few days is sweetness and bliss is a bit of nonsense. All the stuff people struggle with all year , if anything can be magnified 10x over Christmas so I’m glad to be getting back to a normal rhythm. I was trying out the Sony A7 iii for this trip, I’ve been a Canon user for all of ..read more

I have just realised that I haven’t written a blog all year , partly I’ve been busy but also partly the way FB works has changed and the posts don’t get out to the same numbers that they used to but I felt I had to do a blog about the Extreme Scotland book that is now in the shops. It’s 6 years since the idea first came to me, I was lying on my sofa in my then house in Essex , probably napping in the afternoon as is my want, and it struck me that a photographic book of Scottish adventure sports didn’t exist. I had been struck by how rich the visual experience of the Landscape Photographer of t ..read more

Ted Baker photoshoot and film

Back in June, the Ted Baker team contacted me asking if I’d be interested in doing a photoshoot for them . I was interested so we chatted on the phone and discussed the ideas they had , essentially  an off road commute to work showing the varied terrain and conditions the suit was deigned to withstand.  The Ted Baker team had some initial ideas on locations in the Peak District but for the story they were trying to tell, I felt  that the mountains of Scotland would be better suited to give a sense of drama and being in quite spectacular situations that you wouldn’t get in the Peaks ( Sorry my ..read more

Here we are again , sitting in the slack tide of the period between Christmas and New year, looking back and looking forward . I like this time of year, its a natural transition , changing from darkness to light and a time to take stock of whats been , the good , the great , and the tough challenges that either we meet or choose not to. I think in the West we don’t give enough importance to times of transition , of change and the importance to actually sit still with feelings and allow stuff that we suppress to actually surface, breathe and to listen to these things . Maybe thats all sounding ..read more
