Had Special Ed Punishment Changed?

I was in special education in Colorado in the 2000s, in the school we had a "quiet room" where if you became upset, disruptive, has a meltdown, ect you would be sent. It was a small room, tile floor, locked door. You were not allowed food, water, or toilet breaks while in the "quiet room". You had to sit in one specifc corner to come out, then you had to write and read out an apology to the class. If you became upset during the writing or reading you were sent back. This would take hours and sometimes until school was over. Have these punishments gone or are they still in use? submitted by ..read more

How it actually feels to be a SPED student...

I'm a student in middle school, and I'm posting this thread to tell you how sped actually is for a student, and you might wanna read this because they never tell you this about sped online. Here's what it's actually like (at least from my perspective) It makes you left out: You see other students just having to walk to the sidewalk, literally, that's only how far they have to walk to the mainstream bus, while ours just has to come to our house, and the other reason why it makes you feel left out, is because I have paras that have to follow me to class, even when I don't need help, and when n ..read more

Hi, I am a newbie when it comes to US teaching culture. I've been teaching for 3 years now, and handling transition self-contained class. I got a job offer to teach in the US under the J1 bridge USA teacher program, and I would like to get tips on how you organize your classroom and manage the class. What procedures are very heplful for elementary kids with moderate/severe cases? and what routines and rules do you impose in the classroom? I am currently reading Harry Wong's The Classroom Management Book, and I am having a hard time visualizing ways on how a typical American classroom looke li ..read more

Insight into how IEPs are created

I could really use some insight into how accommodations are created please. The reason I am asking is because I have 2 students who have accommodations I have no clue how they could end up with. Student 1 - is allowed to retake any assignment with a score of 70% or less (so a guaranteed C?) Student 2 (senior with ADHD and literally 3 pages of accommodations) - reduce assignments by 50% -grant 2x amount on assignments -must accept all late work up to the end of quarter at no penalty - if assignment is missing something, they are allowed to turn in what is missing for full credit - if work is m ..read more

AAC

I am a parent. I am wondering what are the teacher's opinion about AAC. My child has had AAC with him for a couple of years now. I originally agreed to it because it was suggested by my child's doctor. In the beginning, I thought it wouldn't hurt to try. But over the years, it is clear that the school barely use it with him (base on battery usage), and he is not used to it, and I have trouble getting him to use it myself. In fact, he can verbalize just fine. I thought the school will remove this from his IEP this year, but instead, it seems like all his speech goals have been shifted towards ..read more

Question about how to deal with this

Hello! I am a Special Education TA at an elementary school (grades 3-5) in an ICT class as a 1:1. So my 1:1 used to be very aggressive and oppositional defiant until I came along this past November and now he’s a really cool guy and everyone wants to hangout with him. Anyway, last week there was an assignment to be completed in class, he was raising his hand and I came over to him and he said “I need help spelling”. So I went over to the special ed teacher and she said “you can’t help him, tell him spelling doesn’t count”. Which I was ok with telling him so he could at least try independently ..read more

I want to become a special education teacher, what are the steps?

I want to make sure I do everything correctly. I’ve noticed there’s a handful of people who regret entering this field and wish they’d majored in something more broader that allows them to switch careers. My question is: What should I get my bachelors in? Then, do I pursue my masters in special education? AND… Before this I have never considered going for my masters, so I’m not sure if I have to go for x as my bachelors degree. Or, if I can go for x, y, or z. I’d ask my schools counselor but they’re not much help, so any advice will be appreciated. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! submitted ..read more
