Why do you think SPED teachers are treated so badly by gen ed & admin??

I left teaching, and I can honestly say that poor treatment was part of that. I never went into SPED so I could be admired or loved, but being treated badly by others was just too much. Things like not having my own room to provide services, not getting a planning period, being expected to fix kids, being expected to meet tens of thousands of minutes each week with no extra help all while being expected to solve every behavior problem on my own, being voluntold to go above and beyond with no regard for my service schedule & simultaneously getting no flexibility from teachers. Is it illegal to suspend a kid for over 45 school days?

kid started attending a therapy center 4 days per week and then was given a 45 day suspension after a manifestation meeting due to a behavior related to the disability. so the school says only the 1 day per week counts for the 45 day suspension. however on some of the other days he does have a virtual class but those aren’t counting for suspension submitted by /u/JesusIsKewl [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Why are they so positive ?

Honest question, from a parent. I've noticed every single IEP meeting I've been to, school staff are ALWAYS overly smiley, they'll always discuss things in an IEP meeting as if they're not that big of a deal. Act like every thing is butterflies and rainbows. Literally, is school staff trained to be this way, or?? I understand looking at strengths of a child, and not being overly negative. But my son is going into 3rd grade and hasn't reached a Kindergarten reading level yet, is working in math addition and subtraction with numbers less than 10 (and still struggling). He is at the low 1st perc ..read more

Burning out

I have been a special Ed teacher for almost 10 years. I have been bounced around in the 2 districts I have taught in and just found out I’m switching roles this year as well. Last year I got pretty sick- migraines, stomach issues, my hair fell out ect. So many dr visits and no one could figure out what was going on. I started teaching gen Ed this year and my health issues started to fix itself. I was so happy and finally felt like a good teacher, mother and wife. About a month ago, I found out that because I am the only one with the right certification, I am moving back to special Ed. My heal ..read more

Question about my 2 y 8 mo toddler

So my son is speech delayed and seems to have social anxiety in public and wants to go home whenever we are out. We learned about state EI services late and have him in private PT/OT/Speech for the last 5-6 months. We finally applied to the state EI program hoping to get services and get connected to the county developmental preschool. However, they said that our son was delayed but no enough to qualify. They had all of his medical records and saw that we had been doing private speech/OT/PT. They told us to keep doing that as it’ll help him. He definitely needs socialization and we are trying ..read more

Special ed teach considering leaving the classroom -- book recommendations?

For context: I'm an 11-year SPED teacher who started teaching "late" (28) as I got my bachelor's in journalism and began freelance editing and writing for several years before switching paths. To say I am burnt out is an understatement ... The amount of pressure and expectations put on us, especially SPED teachers, every single day is exhausting. I've been a teacher consultant in addition to my teaching job (basically completing evaluations, meeting with different teams, and supporting students in addition to the normal requirements) and I like that but I didn't think until now that I'm compl ..read more

My youngest daughter is going to be starting kindergarten in the fall. She has an autoimmune disease that caused her to lose some of her vision when she was a year old and she never regained it fully (glasses don’t help). She currently goes to daycare and manages fine there- teachers will tell me sometimes that she couldn’t see something they were pointing out but nothing majorly alarming but daycare is obviously a little more contained than elementary school. She’s totally ready for school in terms of academics and social stuff. I just worry about her navigating the school, being able to see ..read more

Hi, I am wondering if special education teachers at public schools are categorized as licensed professionals? My daughter gets services at school from a spec ed teacher but she only gets reimbursement from the insurance if the provider is a licensed professional.
