A brief overview of Brain Oscillations, Synchrony and Plasticity by author Dr. Jos J. Eggermont
Elsevier SciTech Connect | Neuroscience Journal
by Jos J. Eggermont
2y ago
One may take two approaches to the study of neurological and psychiatric disorders. These are the molecular approach and the systems approach. The first approach is reductionist in kind, the second synthetic. In Brain Oscilliations, Synchrony and Plasticity, I emphasize the latter approach—based on electrophysiology and neuroimaging—partially because I am more familiar with it, but mostly because it is widely applicable to humans. Some of the imaging findings are fortunately highly correlated with molecular findings, especially in Schizophrenia and Alzheimer’s disease, so I included these mol ..read more

Neuropsychological Tools for Dementia
Elsevier SciTech Connect | Neuroscience Journal
by Helmut Hildebrandt
2y ago
During the past decades, the entry of clinical and cognitive neuropsychology into the neurological departments at hospitals has contributed to the differential diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases leading to dementia. Meanwhile, clinical neuropsychologists are regular members of neurologic, psychiatric, and geriatric departments and are involved in testing patients to objectify subtle cognitive deficits or to help find a probable diagnosis. At the same time, the call for more specific and earlier diagnosis of patients suffering from neurodegenerative diseases is getting louder. Thirty year ..read more

A ‘Connectome’ like no other: Our Wired Nerves
Elsevier SciTech Connect | Neuroscience Journal
by Douglas Zochodne
2y ago
The nerve ‘wiring’ of humans and animals has a compelling and often unappreciated biology. ‘Nerves’, or bundles of axons (our ‘wires’) that constitute the peripheral nervous system and their connections, with infiltration throughout the body, possess unique structure and function. Without nerves, there is no sensation and no movement. How they are targeted by disease and injury and how they regenerate is a fascinating story.   Our Wired Nerves: The Human Nerve Connectome relays this story in a format approachable by the public and by those new to the field. This book, published in August ..read more
