By, Joe Cat (@JoeCattt) This is an analysis of Spotify’s most recent Loud & Clear Annual Music Economics Report released on March 18, 2024, which can be found at https://loudandclear.byspotify.com/ Spotify’s “Loud & Clear” announcement, while seemingly a step towards greater transparency, raises questions about the actual benefits to the broader artist community and the potential skewing of numbers to favor the platform and its major stakeholders. Questionable Impact on Artists Revenue Distribution Concerns: Despite Spotify’s claim of tripling payouts since 2017, the underlying issue ..read more

By, Bob Lefsetz “A New Publisher Promises Authors ‘the Lion’s Share of the Profit’ – Authors Equity is tiny but has big industry names behind it. Its founders hope their profit-sharing approach and experience will entice authors.” Free link: https://shorturl.at/cfwHK Musical artists don’t know how good they have it. After all, they could be AUTHORS! Talk about an antiquated industry. One thing I love about the music business is it’s down and dirty, ultimately it’s all about the cash, either you can generate it or you can’t, where you went to school doesn’t matter. But just having a job in the ..read more

Label Layoffs

By, Bob Lefsetz They used to do this when times were bad, but never when times were good. Hell, the three major label groups all keep trumpeting their results, how great they are, then again Bill Ackman has a big position in Universal, which proves the point, it’s all about the stock price baby, the underlying business is irrelevant. Don’t confuse this with the tech layoffs of the past year. Unlike the record labels, the tech companies had been on a hiring spree, they were all about growth, the future was so bright they had to wear shades, the layoffs were all about right-sizing, not undercutt ..read more

PUBLICITY There must be a story, that first and foremost intrigues the writer who believes it will intrigue the reader, otherwise the effort is worthless. Many publicity people will take your money and they’ll send out mailings to people like me who will instantly delete them. If all you want is a listing that your music is coming out, or that you’re going on tour, a press release might be sufficient to achieve that, but not anything more. Publicity is a game. You’re selling and the writer/outlet is buying. Think of how hard it is to get someone to buy anything these days. Then think about how ..read more

If you’re telling me how great you are, how you did this or that, what you own, where you’ve been…my eyes start to roll into the back of my head. That’s how you tell someone is an amateur, if they don’t stop telling you how great they are. You’ll know this if you ever encounter those at the top. Who are typically more warm and gentle than those at the bottom. Their accomplishments speak for them. If you’re a public figure and you’re telling us what you’ve achieved, you’re just demonstrating your insecurity. You think you’re winning, but you’re not. I know that the music business, many business ..read more

This is what happens when you tell people what they want to hear. And it doesn’t only happen in politics. Music is one of the worst offenders. It’s built on the premise that anyone can be a star, when this is patently untrue. That’s what people want. Optimism. They don’t want to learn that it’s almost impossible to make it, that few do, but even worse it takes years of hard work and dedication and a ton of luck and today even the talented don’t always succeed. No, sign up for this website, we’ll advertise your wares, you’ll get hits, you’ll go broke. And then there’s Spotify. I’m poor, I’m a m ..read more

By, Bob Lefsetz It’s all about your core audience. I know you’ve heard this a zillion times, all that stuff about a thousand true fans, but that’s not what I’m talking about here. Sure, first and foremost you need a fan base, but once you have one, IGNORE THE EXTERNAL, IT’S A WASTE OF TIME! I know, you’re sitting at home wondering how you can be bigger, how your act can break. Maybe you hire a big PR agent, maybe you spam writers, maybe you hire an independent radio promo person, the key is to spread the word. NO! I’m not saying radio airplay is worthless, but how many people are still listeni ..read more

By Bob Lefsetz (Editorial comment: The 12th paragraph is where the jewels begin… ~Wendy Day) You may or may not be aware of the CMA announcement yesterday. The bottom line, streaming works fine. Needless to say, the songwriters, the indies, are up in arms. So, what is the CMA? It’s the U.K. Competition and Markets Authority. You remember, they held hearings. And now they say there’s not going to be a market investigation. The study that was initiated six months ago will be completed, but as for the heinous streaming payouts small labels and players themselves have been complaining about: “Ther ..read more

By, Bob Lefsetz This story has been buzzing for months, but I point you to a recent article on the decline of new music in the United States: “It’s Official: New Music Is Shrinking In Popularity In The United States”: https://bit.ly/3uZw9gv Is new music not as good? I’d argue that case, but that is not what is happening here. We’ve reached the tipping point, YOU JUST CAN’T REACH PEOPLE ANYMORE! The music business is the canary in the coal mine. It’s where disruption happens first. What happens in the music business ultimately spreads to other industries. So what is happening here is there’s a ..read more

Have you seen this video? “We tracked what happens after TikTok songs go viral”: https://bit.ly/3Q8HZhk Unfortunately it conflates monthly listeners with streams, and the difference is important. The bottom line is if you want to make money it’s the total number of streams, not the total number of monthly listeners. Each listener is unique, but the same listener can listen to a song one time, which is really only 30 seconds, or two hundred times. I could go deeper, but in truth no one really cares, they just want to make it, get that big record company check, what they’re actually doing, the q ..read more
