Back in 2014 I met with Josh Byrne from ABC Gardening Australia to talk about my lovely garden in Karrinyup. There have been many changes to the garden since this little video was filmed – as we gardeners all know ‘gardens are never finished’ but the essence of the design still defines the landscape. I am a firm believer that we should be designing sites, which is to say, we should design our house and the external spaces together so we can get the best use of a small site. My vision for the future is that we build well designed, smaller homes which are well connected to the outdoors. I hope y ..read more

High Density Living and Gardens: Can We Have Both?

Not only can we have both but in our increasingly urbanised environments we need to consider every opportunity to experience the benefits, both mental and physical of having a garden. Gardens mitigate stress, allow us to connect to nature and in the case of apartment living, have a social opportunity to meet and communicate with our neighbours. Last year I was invited to design the roof garden as well as the entry and grounds gardens for an exciting new apartment development in Mount Pleasant. It is aptly name ‘The Sanctuary’ Designed by MJA studios in consultation with John Woon from Develo ..read more

Biophilia is a word that you will soon be hearing much more of and its going to have an increasing influence on Urban Planning, Architecture, Interior Design and Landscape Design. The word ‘Biophilia’ means a love of life or living things. In the real sense it means creating living environments that make us feel connected to nature. If you were asked to imagine being somewhere you feel relaxed and calm, more than 90% of people imagine a natural setting. We feel good in nature and our physical and mental well being is dependent on how we are able to engage with the natural environment both at ..read more

(Reproduced from The Weekend Australian Magazine 24th March 2018) SMALL IS BEAUTIFUL It was great to be invited to submit yet another of my gardens to the Weekend Australian for publication. The style is contemporary reflecting the design of the Klopper Davis home it adorns. Referencing the butterfly roof, I introduced similar curves to define both the rear courtyard and the entry roof garden. Read about the design process in the article and for more photos see this garden on Houzz. (download the article) Another example of what is possible when designing dynamic small outdoor spaces. Designing small gardens – a holistic approach

Design your site not your house – the garden should not be just the bits left over My clients often tell me that they ‘live’ outdoors in the summer. But with Australia’s population set to rise, and with the desire for larger houses on more compact blocks, we will -whether we like it or not – be left with smaller and smaller outdoor spaces in which to enjoy our great way of life. Unfortunately the outdoor area is often the home’s smallest room and in many cases it is confined to the modest rectangles of unused space left after the house is finished. Historically, landscaping has been an integr ..read more

Getting stoned in the garden

All gardeners know there’s much more to a garden than plants. The lushest foliage and flowers have limited appeal without other elements to act as a foil. Rocks and stones play a vital role, setting unpolished grainy textures against delicate plants, playing earthy tones against vivid floral displays and adding weight, mass and a sense of solidity to a dynamic green scene. Enlist these heavy hitters to take your garden to the next level of loveliness. click on the houzz button to read full article The post Getting stoned in the garden appeared first on Cultivart Landscape Design ..read more
