We’re excited to announce that the nonprofit housing group First Community Housing has selected SERA and our partners Lendlease to design and build their most ambitious affordable housing project to date: a 365-unit LEED-Platinum development near the San Jose Diridon Station. Named McEvoy Apartments, the project will be built using an innovative mass timber frame with a traditional lateral system. “McEvoy Apartments is the embodiment of everything we value at SERA, taken to the next level,” said Principal and Director of California Housing Veronica Hinkley Reck. “The transit-oriented developme ..read more

Mass Timber + Hospitality: The User Perspective
SERA Architects | Sustainable Design for the Built Environment.
by Erica Spiritos (Swinerton)

The use of mass timber construction is gaining momentum in the US; however, its aesthetic, construction, and sustainability advantages remain largely unexplored for hotels. This is the final entry in our series exploring the development of a realistic, hypothetical mass timber hotel. Don’t miss parts I to III: the developer, architect and operator points-of-view! Spread-eagle on the bed after an exhausting day of meetings, I exhale deeply. I used to feel excited about the prospect of work travel — the luxury of jet-setting around the country to visit places far from where I was raised. The ima ..read more

Mass Timber + Hospitality: The Operator Perspective

This is the third entry in our blog series exploring the development of a realistic, hypothetical mass timber hotel. Previously, we looked at the perspectives of the developer and architect, and next week, we’ll see how mass timber can create a memorable guest experience! Walking into our hotel, I smiled as I scanned the wood lobby ceiling, heavy timber beams and posts — in the sea of hotel sameness out there, I prefer to manage a hotel with a bit of character. One where, in a world with such uncertainty — at least lately — a structure can somehow reassure with its visible strength and natural ..read more

This is the second entry in our blog series exploring the development of a mass timber hotel through the points of view of a developer, a design & construction team, an operator, and a guest. Check out our first entry: the Developer perspective. Golden panels of cross-laminated timber soar out toward a tree-tipped horizon, framed by a set of walls enclosing the main stair and evaporating into a skeleton of wood framing. I lose myself in the image for a moment, then look up from my screen and refocus. I need to push and finish this field report: ‘Timber structure observed to be nearly ..read more

The use of mass timber construction is gaining momentum in the US; however, its aesthetic, construction, and sustainability advantages remain largely unexplored for hotels. Our multi-disciplinary team has begun exploring the construction of hotels with mass timber by examining the potential advantages and challenges that would be encountered in envisioning and bringing to market a mass timber hotel. This blog series looks at a realistic, hypothetical mass timber hotel through the point of view of the developer, the design & construction team, the operator, and the guest.  I always get ..read more

Work Design Magazine Competition Success!

Back in June, two teams from the SERA workplace studio submitted for an international competition hosted by Work Design Magazine. We are proud to announce that not only did both entries make it to the finals, one was selected as the WINNER!   With the ongoing pandemic, the competition posed a less idealistic question than designers are often challenged to answer: what will the next work environment look like in a world where Coronavirus remains a short-term, lethal threat? As much as we would all love to get past this tumultuous time, the competition challenged the teams to propose m ..read more
