Cellulose insulation shortage?

Hi, I'm currently looking to add insulation to my attic using cellulose insulation. Does anyone know if there is a shortage of cellulose insulation on the market? I've been looking for a few months but none of the big box stores carry cellulose insulation and only carry fiberglass insulation. Also any recommendations on where to buy insulation other than the big box stores? Thanks. Statistics: Posted by homer2011 — Oct 19th, 2023 11:03 am ..read more

I've been looking at a bunch off amazon but not sure if they are accurate. Looking at co2, tvoc, hcho, temp, humidity. Ideally I don't have to recalibrate every time it's turned off. Would be great to have a recommendation from anyone that has gone through thus exercise. Statistics: Posted by SargeJ — Oct 7th, 2023 10:09 am ..read more

Tips for saving money on your air conditioning bills

There are lots of good tips online for saving money on air conditioning. See, for example, this article. Here are some more obscure tips which you might not have seen before. • If you want to feel even cooler in the summer, you can use ceiling fans in addition to air conditioning. You can get a cheap ceiling fan from the Habitat for Humanity ReStore. Or you can go to any thrift store and buy a cheap stand fan instead. • Also, (at least for men) you could wear a black T-shirt soaked with cool water. Or you could wear an ice vest. You can buy an ice vest or make your own. • If it's not too hu ..read more

Residential Air Source Heat Pump vs Geothermal vs Nat Gas operating costs

It seems like we need a thread like this, so let's start one up. There's such a lack of transparency and willingness of people to report their usage/numbers, that something like this should help. Let's include things like location, home size and type of heating systems in the home - like radiant floor, central ducting, any high energy usage items that might throw the numbers off, and anything that may be material. I'll go first. Location: In a rural area south of Ottawa. Main floor and second floor totalling 2200 square feet, with some parts of the home having high cathedral ceilings of 18 ..read more

Geothermal owners - When, or how often, does your 2nd stage for heating turn on?

Just had our 4 ton horizontal ground loop (potentially undersized) geo installed towards the end of October, and we're trying to get a sense of if our unit is running correctly - aside from the noise issue I made a thread about recently - and if it was appropriately sized. I have some concerns, due to the fact that a heat loss calculation wasn't done, and I don't think some of the 18-20 foot ceilings within the home were taken into consideration during the design stage. Main floor and 2nd floor total 2200 sq feet, basement has another 800 (which has radiant floor heating). We were sized for a ..read more

Residential geothermal sound levels?

Hi all, it's my first time posting in the Green/Eco Friendly forum. I live just outside of Ottawa. We had a ground loop geothermal system installed just over 3 weeks ago, which we were extremely happy to finally have installed and have heating the home in the nick of time before winter. However, we noticed within the first few days or so that it is noisy. We've never had experience in the past before with noisy HVAC systems, living in 4-5 different homes over the past 40+ years, so it caught us a bit off guard. The unit was sold to us as being super quiet, but post-install, we're now being t ..read more

Federal or Provincial(Ontario) Green Home Incentive?

I received a flyer from Enbridge about possible upgrades to the house to the tune of 5k based on a $600 evaluation. On some digging it seems like there are two separate but very similar plans. Federal - https://www.nrcan.gc.ca/energy-efficien ... rant/23441 Provincial - https://www.enbridgegas.com/residential ... ncy-rebate Not sure if both are same or different as this site shows them separately - https://www.energyhub.org/incentives/#canada-wide Anybody has experience with this in Ontario.
