I highly doubt McCarthy would’ve won reelection, or even renomination, in 1958 due to his loss in popularity with the people and standing with his party. But what might’ve happened during the time after his actual death and leading up to and after the 58 elections?

The United States was called the United States because it was a collection of united but modtly independent states, correct? But today, the word "state" is not used colloquially to refer to nations. I'm curious if the word "state" was used in that way when the United States was founded. If so, then "United States" would today translate to United Countries or United Nations - but that seems a little counterintuitive because, in my understanding, there was and obviously still is a difference between the concept of a nation, which conveys an independent global political unit, and the United Stat ..read more
