Despite similar pain and function scores, patients who were obese and underwent arthroscopic rotator cuff repair had increased rates of complications, readmissions and reoperations vs. non-obese patients, published results showed.
Alexis B. Sandler, MD, and colleagues used the Embase and PubMed databases to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of 14 studies that included 118,331 patients (mean age, 59.2 years) who underwent arthroscopic rotator cuff repair.
According to the study, 47,488 patients were obese (BMI of 30 kg/m2) at the time of surgery. Outcome measures included VAS pain ..read more

Results showed patients with osteoarthritis who underwent carpal tunnel release may use more health care resources and experience more severe and persistent carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms vs. patients without arthritis.
“Patients with preexisting hand and/or wrist arthritis are more likely to have a longer recovery after carpal tunnel release as compared to those who do not,” study co-author Brett F. Michelotti, MD, told Healio. “This means that the hand and wrist may swell more, hurt more, become stiff or hurt in areas independent of the operative site. Patients may also ..read more

Results showed patients who had a vertebral body tether rupture experienced mild general curve progression with a low rate of revision. However, younger patients with larger curves may have an increased chance of undergoing revision.
“We are still trying to refine the indications for vertebral body tethering. Ultimately, having a non-fusion option for the treatment of scoliosis in kids is going to be important,” Tyler A. Tetreault, MD, pediatric orthopedic surgeon in the Jackie and Gene Autry Orthopedic Center at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, told Healio. “[Vertebral ..read more

Published results showed arthroscopic correction was associated with favorable outcomes for patients with femoroacetabular impingement despite a similar progression of osteoarthritis vs. patients who received nonoperative treatment.
Researchers at Hospital for Special Surgery analyzed data from 100 patients (200 hips) who received primary unilateral hip arthroscopy (100 hips) or nonoperative treatment (100 hips) for femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) between 2010 and 2012. Outcome measures included radiographic progression of OA and Tönnis classification. Researchers noted 98% of operative ..read more

Published results showed use of denosumab may reduce radiographic progression and prevent new erosive joints among patients with erosive hand osteoarthritis.
Researchers randomly assigned patients with erosive hand OA to receive either 60 mg of denosumab every 3 months (n = 51) or a placebo (n = 49) for 48 weeks. Researchers considered change in the total Ghent University Scoring System score at week 24, where positive changes correspond to remodeling, as the primary endpoint. Secondary endpoints included change in the Ghent University Scoring System score and the number of new erosive joints ..read more
