“Would he be treated the same way and with the same love?” That thought ran through Jason Gray’s mind as he wondered how his family would react to the infant son that would soon join Jason and Shereta Gray’s family through adoption. As they got closer to finalizing the adoption, they were nervous about how their village would accept him. Nevertheless, Jason and Shereta were sure of their journey to be a village for a woman and her child through domestic adoption.   Nine years earlier, in 2011, Jason and Shereta faced enormous grief when their biological son passed away at birth. Compiled by Jenny Riddle, with contributions from Traci Newell and Mark Sly When children enter homes from traumatic backgrounds, their lives have already been shaped by circumstances that make brokenness a part of their story. Difficulties children may have faced include medical issues, abuse or neglect, and abandonment. All have experienced grief on various levels. Whether they came into family homes as infants or older, children from adoption and in foster care know what “hard” looks like in life. Children are forced to reconcile the goodness of God with a life that has been difficult.  ..read more

Stand for Orphans® is an incredible way to get children involved in orphan care and let them know they have a valuable contribution to God’s work around the world. One family who has participated experienced that reality, “We thought the Stand for Orphans was a great way to raise awareness in our community for orphan care as well as help people become aware of Lifeline and the wonderful ministry opportunities that are available through them. We also thought the stand was a great way to teach children about orphans and how they can make an impact in the lives of orphans/vulnerable children ..read more

Mark Sly serves as the (un)adopted Regional Coordinator for Africa and Eurasia. He is the father of three children and on youth ministry staff for nine years before coming to Lifeline. Parenting. Fatherhood. For Mark Sly, those two words initially wrought fear into his heart, as the heavy responsibility of raising a child dropped its full weight on him through an 8-pound newborn. Eighteen years later, Mark has learned that he doesn’t have all the answers, but God has guided him to several survival skills through life that has helped him move from parenting in fear and anxiety to parenting in t ..read more

Compiled by Jenny Riddle with Traci Newell, LBSW, TBRI® Practitioner, Education Specialist & National Program Director for Families Count For foster parents, talking with children in their care about their families may be uncomfortable, particularly when circumstances are challenging. As shepherds of their children’s hearts, though, parents must recognize that a child’s understanding of his identity and self-worth is connected to his family of origin. By talking openly, parents give children the freedom to safely explore the emotions and thoughts that are so closely tied to their story. Gi ..read more

“Education is a matter of building bridges.” Ralph Ellison Recently, one of our Bridge tutors spent some time with a fifteen-year-old girl with Down Syndrome who with tears streaming down her face, asked why she had to been born different? We have all heard the bowl of alphabet soup diagnosis: OCD, ADHD, ODD, GAD, Dyslexic, Poor working memory, Developmentally Delayed, Down Syndrome, Autistic, this list could fill a page, single spaced. What does it mean to be made in God’s image but socially, emotionally and/or cognitively not fit in to the world’s expectations? What does it mean to be define ..read more

“Ugh, teenagers!” “Teens just go brain dead for a little while and then come back.” “It’s all the raging hormones — they act crazy!” “If we can just get through these years, we will be ok.” In the book Brainstorm, Daniel L. Siegel, M.D., provides abundant research on the changes that take place within the brain of adolescents — occurring between the ages of 12 and 24. Siegel says often the wild ideas believed about teenagers are simply myths. They do not “act crazy” because of raging hormones or “go brain dead,” nor do the parents have to just survive and get through these years. These adolesc ..read more

Christ is Sufficient to Carry us on our Mission

In the Old Testament, we see how God provided a way for people to deal with their sin. Once a year, the high priest entered the Holy of Holies, taking the blood spilled from sacrificial  animals. The blood meant the death of an animal as a substitute for the death of the priest and the people. God deemed the blood of the animal as sufficient to purify the people of their ceremonial uncleanness. But, this cleansing was temporary and only sufficient for past sins. While the blood covered over the sins of the people, it could not actually cleanse the guilt  of the priest or the people ..read more

Hell is Real: The Urgency of the Mission on Good Friday

As human beings, we don’t want to believe in Hell. We tend to want to see Heaven as a reality for anyone who is “good” and follows the rules. The world constantly tells us that anyone who isn’t truly “bad” will go to heaven, but this is not a biblical reality. The default for sinful humanity is Hell. On Good Friday, we face the reality that we have sinned against a holy and righteous God and deserve punishment and separation from Him forever. Many ask, “How can God allow a good person to go to Hell?”  Truth be told, the mystery of the cross is that God takes the wrath we deserve to give ..read more

In celebration of Social Work Month, we asked one of our case workers in Tennessee, Lauren Haun, about the field of social work and why she believes this work is “essential.” Lifeline is so thankful for our many skilled social workers on staff, and know they are making a difference as they strive to bring gospel hope to the vulnerable. Q. How did you get interested in social work? A. If you would have asked me two years ago if I would ever have a job as a social worker, I would have told you, “no way!” The idea had never crossed my mind. … But during my college years, I worked at an after-scho ..read more
