Another week, another blog post … well, If you believe that… Anyway! – It’s time to revisit the Rule of Thirds. In this article I discussed the idea that you use a built-in feature on your camera to give you a three-by-three grid. You use that grid to line up your image and put the Important Bits of your photo on. A History Lesson – and why the Rule of Thirds works Let’s talk a bit more. In fact let’s talk about painting! Specifically Renaissance painters. I must admit I don’t know my Monet from my Money personally, oh hang on, he was impressionist… I digress. These Renaissance painters were c ..read more

The Story Behind – Above Brooklyn Picture-postcard Photography – read all about it! So this is an occasional series where give a full account of a particular image… in this case it’s all about – how blue skies can come and go – quickly! My original photo story went something like … The Story Behind – Above Brooklyn This is the ‘Brooklyn classic landscape photography shot’ I have had in mind for years. And to put it into perspective, I have already got this shot – but I had taken it on an iPhone, not my Big Camera. To put it into even more perspective, it’s about a 90 minute walk from Brooklyn ..read more

Maximize Compability – Photoshop Tips – The Worst Feature in Photoshop A short blog this. But wanted to pass on something I found out – it’s simply the worst aspect of Photoshop I have found. In all the years of using it. There is a button called ‘Maximize Compatibility’ that appears when you save an image. Glory Be! It makes sure you can see the file properly on previous versions of Photoshop. It generates previews of the image on other software like Lightroom. How convenient, how useful. Ah – that little button… so innocuous, so much disk used! And it doubles, or triples, your file size… Y ..read more

The Story Behind – Stars Over Somersby Astro Photography – read all about it! So this is an occasional series where give a full account of a particular image… in this case it’s all about – well it was a massive(!) night My original photo story went something like … Stars above Somersby, Somersby Falls, NSW This photo is possibly the photo I’m most proud of for the whole 2022 year. I’d had a an idea of an Astro photo of Somersby falls in my mind for a while. I had seen images on the web and forgotten what they looked like, but recalled that it had to be taken in or around August. And of course ..read more

Road Trip Photography – The Joys of Road-tripping Ah – the lure of the road… Pack the car – key in ignition, fire her up. Get back on the road and genuinely slow down to see the sights as you pass. (Ignoring the honking horns and fists being waved from the ute behind). Find somewhere to stay – unpack and unwind at leisure in new ‘plush’ surroundings. Explore. And then rinse and repeat for just as long as you can. So exactly where will you be that evening, and what time you will arrive are likely secondary to the endorphin rush of the whole shebang. Never forget – the luxury of the roadside acc ..read more

The Story Behind – Brooklyn Morning Gold Brooklyn Photography – read all about it! So this is an occasional series where give a full account of a particular image… in this case it’s all about learning how to use a new camera – and some very unusual light….   My original photo story went something like … Brooklyn Peace I love getting out to Brooklyn and down to the waterfront. On this day, the clouds had been building previously for a day or so, and despite a fairly early rise needed, the alarm was duly set. I have a relatively full portfolio taken down near McKell baths, in line with how ..read more

Photographic gear – let’s have a think, shall we? >>> If you’re not using what you have, you won’t use what you think you need to buy. <<< It’s not my quote – I’ll credit Ken Duncan with the original which I have paraphrased. I’ll expand on it though. ‘If I had a big lens I’d take more photos’. ‘If I had a nice camera I’d love to get out and about around [insert hometown] and take some great pictures.’ A long (long!) time ago me and my mates were ‘getting into’ photography and we each bought a body, a 50mm lens, and maybe one more lens. That was your starter kit at that time ..read more

So this is an occasional series where give a full account of a particular image… in this case it’s all about – ah-hem – staying safe… and also a multi-step approach to photoshop   My original photo story went something like … On a recent weekend in the Blue Mountains, I had taken advantage of some down time in the afternoon when I had some time to myself.
