If you’ve been through menopause or know someone who has, you likely know menopause can make you a hot mess or cause other symptoms that can affect your mood. But does it cause women to become “hysterical” and transform them into a ‘mental mess?’ The answer is a resounding No! But mood and mental health and menopause have been tightly linked in high-income countries since at least 1816 when Charles-Pierre-Louis de Gardanne wrote in 1816 that “hysteria, or nervous affection of the uterus” was a typical symptom of the menopause. The words hysterectomy and hysteria are derived from the Greek word ..read more

Menopause versus Age Many people mistakenly think that menopause means a woman is getting old. That’s probably one of the main reasons menopause is considered a taboo topic. But menopause isn’t about age at all–it’s about transition. The transition from the menstruating and reproductive years to the not menstruating and post-reproductive years. In fact, menopause can happen at almost any age. 1 in 10,000 women are in menopause before age 20 1 in 1,000 women are in menopause before age 30 1 in 100 women are in menopause before age 40 (premature menopause) 1 in 10 to 1 in 20 women are in menopa ..read more

Menopause symptoms have a huge impact on women in the workplace and on the businesses that employ them. It was the subject of my latest book, Working Through Menopause: The Impact on Women, Businesses, and the Bottom Line. The Society of Women’s Health Research (SWHR) recently published a survey on this topic that Dr. Sharon Seibel and I had the privilege of helping develop. Below are some of the highlights of that survey, which is called the Employee Perspectives and challenges concerning the Transition of Menopause (EMPACT Menopause) Study. The study highlights some of the far-reaching econo ..read more

Elin…what? Elinzanetant (El-in-Zan-uh-Tant) is a new menopause treatment that the FDA has found safe and effective in treating hot flashes in phase 3 trials. Of the 1.2 billion women expected to be in menopause by 2030, roughly 80 percent are expected to experience hot flashes, the most common menopause symptom that women complain about. Hot flashes affect sleep and quality of life and are being investigated for other impacts. For many women, taking the highly effective hot flash treatment estrogen is both a blessing and a curse. A blessing because it is so effective; a curse because a large ..read more

For most people, the approaching holidays are a happy and exciting time. For many others, Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day is a time of increased anxiety and sadness. Women in perimenopause and menopause often find that anxiety and sadness are two of the most troublesome menopause symptoms. To be sure, antidepressants can be very helpful. But the words of Hippocrates from around 400 BC still ring true today. “Let food be thy me ..read more

Ovarian cancer isn’t the most common cancer, but it’s one of the most lethal. That’s because 70% of the time ovarian cancer has already spread before it is diagnosed. It is very difficult to either feel on exam or find by ultrasound because the earlier cancers are so small compared with the amount of area of a woman’s pelvis.   These two new tests being studied are not quite ready for routine clinical use, but they are hopefully coming soon.     One test uses a small brush to take a sample of cells from the end of the fallopian tubes where it is believed most ovarian cance ..read more
