Photographing Madeira: The Realities of a Photographer

Persistence is a factor I’ve often spoken about. It’s something I believe that every successful photographer needs. Building a good portfolio requires more than just meeting up and taking some photos. Sure, sometimes we get lucky and return home from a trip with several portfolio images but more often than not, that isn’t the case. An example I want to talk about today is a 2-week trip my wife and I made to the beautiful island of Madeira over Christmas 2021. This was a location we’ve both wanted to visit for a long time. It was mainly the Fanal forest that we wanted to photograph but after mo ..read more

The Noise Inside
Christian Hoiberg Blog

Have you ever had a noise somewhere deep inside your head? Sometimes a mere whisper, other times a deafening roar. A noise that can’t be hushed. Through bad times and through good. It’s always there. That’s what this collection is about. It’s the only way I know to expose it. To let it out. The Noise Inside is a personal journey through photography. A way to scream when the noise takes over. It started during a creative block in 2018 but it wasn’t until my wife went through serious health issues two years later that the images spoke to me. That I understood their importance. Not just in terms ..read more

Return of the Midnight Sun

Things work a little different north of the Arctic Circle. Forget about routines as an outdoor photographer; your alarm needs to be adjusted on a daily basis. Winter is long and dark. In the Lofoten Islands, we have about 3 weeks where the sun doesn't rise above the horizon at all. The periods before and after are equally dark with only a few hours of light per day. Most of this is no more than a regular blue hour. At least the Northern Lights keep us entertained both day and night. When March approaches, days are quickly getting longer. The weather doesn't improve much but 'everyone' is out e ..read more

Best of the Lofoten Islands 2020

2020 didn't quite turn out as most of us expected. The winter workshop season ended abruptly only a few weeks in and as the pandemic spread across the world, all the remaining workshops of the year got canceled. It didn't take long before all tourists cleared out from Lofoten. What was expected to be another busy, and crowded season, suddenly became the complete opposite. Popular locations where you'd normally see a dozen photographers were now empty. Now, the Lofoten Islands is a rather remote region in Northern Norway so we have been fortunate enough not to have had a lot of cases here. Ther ..read more

Portfolio Series: Abstract Minimalism

It’s often easy to get stuck into the same habits and forget to challenge yourself creatively. We find a scenic landscape, we set up our wide-angle composition, wait for a nice and colorful sunrise, and then follow a specific workflow in Photoshop or Lightroom. I’ve been in this rut for a long time and at some point along the way, my motivation for photography faded - as a result, I kept doing the same steps over and over. This series is different. It’s a series I’ve worked on since late 2018. These 15 images are not your typical landscape photography. It’s not the standard setup and processin ..read more

Portfolio Series: El Bosque

Spain is most known for its sandy beaches, comfortable climate and delicious pintxos but the country has much more to offer from a photographer's perspective; majestic peaks, a rugged coastline and an abundance of hauntingly beautiful forests. This mini-series features some of my favorite moments wandering in the foggy Spanish forests between 2016 and 2017. The rainy and colder days were gladly welcomed by a Norwegian who isn't too fond with warm beach days! I hope you enjoyed my Portfolio Series: El Bosque. For those who’d like to learn how to capture similar images, I’ve written ..read more

The autumn months of 2019 were packed with back-to-back workshops in Lofoten (Norway), Dolomites (Italy), Slovenia and Croatia. It was a busy period with lots of great photo opportunities but most importantly it was a time well spent with great groups of people from various corners of our planet. When we reached the beautiful Triglav region of Slovenia we were met with an explosion of colors. The trees were a good mix between deep red and golden orange, and the ground was equally colorful. While we did stop by several iconic photo locations, such as the Bled Lake, it was these colorful trees t ..read more

Northern Lights Above Stetind National Mountain

A few weeks ago, Jillian and I went on a little road trip and our first stop was Norway's national mountain, Stetind. This is only a 5-hour drive from home which made it the perfect place to spend the night. Jillian has been wanting to photograph this peak for a while so I was beyond thrilled that we got some beautiful conditions upon our arrival. Normally I would introduce this place to a handful of photography workshops during the autumn and winter months but thanks to the pandemic that wasn’t quite the case this year. Even though I've got a love/hate relationship with this spot, there's no ..read more

Portfolio Series: Bears of Finland

Photographing bears in Finland was an exciting and unforgettable experience that became one of the photographic highlights of a rather strange 2020. It’s hard to explain the feeling of having these massive animals at only an arm-length away; it’s simply something that must be experienced. It was astonishing to have them so close but I was even more intrigued with their personalities that started showing after studying them through the course of several days. There was a total of 8 bears frequenting our base and each had their own unique personality. The more they stopped by, the more obvious t ..read more
