As 2021 recedes in the rear view mirror, what an amazing year it has been for all of us here at Waterfall. Arts Glassworks. We closed out the year with a final project by the high school kids here. They’re pretty psyched. This sculptural Magnificence will be presented to the private foundation that donated the funds so this program could exist. This piece, along with a video of its making, and interviews with the students by Chris Battaglia, will presented at a future date. The guy in the photo, in the blue shirt holding the sculpture, is Brian Frus, our new teaching addition to the studio. W ..read more

Our Glassblowing studio was featured on NBC News Center Maine’s “207” last night. It is Maine‘s most influential news program. And the reporter and videographer did an excellent job. Also, they gave us 5 1/2 minutes of air time , which is unheard of. I know Waterfall Arts will get great publicity from this. click the link below to watch the video: https://www.newscentermaine.com/article/news/local/207/glassblowing-heats-up-in-a-new-studio-at-waterfall-arts-belfast-maine-belfast-area-high-school-glassblowers-new-england/97-f4330acc-38be-4248-b41d-54032f9f8346 ..read more

The new Electric Furnace has arrived from Oregon!! Delivering this unit was like moving the pyramids. Anytime you are using a huge crane to swing a 1,000 pound object onto a front step, having it lowered down a flight of stairs, using a winch to prevent the furnace from sliding uncontrollably down the ramp, there can be a slight risk of mishap. This operation was handled amazingly and creatively well by Belmont Boat Works. Thanks to Dan, Sam, and Nina for their ingenuity, ability and bravery. The photos and videos pretty much sum the whole thing up. This was absolutely a hard-hat area. Now th ..read more

Long Overdue Update

You'd think we were busy building a studio or something, with how long it has been since I gave a blog progress report. Veggie Burner test firing. The Custom-built burners have arrived, and we are figuring out how to get them to burn efficiently and cleanly. We'll get it. They are loud, like a rocket ship, and so sound dampening has been added to our To-Do list. The first half of our Canned Heat 100-pound Electric Furnace got wired up yesterday. This Control Panel will regulate the megatons of amperage needed to keep the glass hot. It is a beautiful, well-built unit. It is official. Our name ..read more

I ate take-out at the farthest-north Chinese restaurant in the United States. The L1 - Chicken and Broccoli, pork fried rice with egg roll. Very good. This weekend, I took a jaunt up to Fort Kent, which is in Aroostock County, at the Canadian border with New Brunswick. I had always wanted to go that far north in Maine, and this weekend was as good a time as any. Eating chinese food in the northern-most Chinese restaurant was not on my list, however. As I was driving by China Garden, looking for lunch, I decided to stop. I love Chinese food, eat it all the time, and I love trying it new towns ..read more

No, no, no, it's just me. The second glory hole (reheating chamber), is underway with the help of John Sage, of Montville. The barrel was rolled by Cox Machine in Searsmont. That white, fluffy stuff between the brick and the metal cylinder is FiberFrax. Nasty stuff. Don't want to breathe that in. This reheating chamber will be a little bit smaller than our other one, for variety. We still have quite a lot to do on this. Our vertical belt sander is getting a makeover. New paint, new roller stand. Carmi found this beauty on CraigsList, from a wood shop in New Hampshire. The thing weighs a ton ..read more

Carmi Katsir installs the final edging for the exhaust hood. The exhaust hood covers the length of the studio, just about. The door off to the left is to the storage room. Wide-angle lens makes the door look like a phone booth, but it is actually a normal-sized door. Media Day! Carmi seriously contemplates his answers to Chris Battaglia, Marketing Manager of Waterfall Arts, for a future podcast. DownEast magazine was here shortly after that to get details for an upcoming article for their May issue. The word is getting out about this new studio! Next, we turn to the building of the new Glor ..read more

This complex looking construction will be our exhaust hood. It practically spans the entire length of the studio. Containing and removing heat from the studio is vitally important, and challenging. We are hoping this design will work well. The sheet metal will continue to go on the roof and then on the face, creating a front wall. Spaces will be left open where the glass equipment needs to be accessed. The rust and patina of the sheet metal are gorgeous, showing its age and previous life. This is one gorgeous marver. The marver is an essential table used to roll and shape the glass in its ea ..read more

Owen Kingsley, of WABI-TV, the CBS affiliate out of Bangor, interviewed me about the new studio. Click on the link to watch this video. He did a great job asking all the right questions. Unfortunately, I forgot to mention the fact that we will not be burning any fossil fuels. Only waste vegetable oil. Hopefully, my interviewing skills will improve, and I won't make that mistake again. Need to be ready for Stephen Colbert someday. (Not happenin'.) Improvements continue: Two exhaust fans in the windows. All the ceiling lights installed. White trim is going up on the dividing wall on the right ..read more
